Hi Guys,

So here it is, the second ever YYG developers competition.

Competition Page

Not much different from the last competition you'll notice. Excluding the theme of course, Ancient Civilisation. Hopefully that leaves room for a bit of imagination.

EDIT:

We've had a lot of "What if?" scenarios, and a lot of repeated questions in this thread. Please read/search the topic before posting.

<span style='font-size:13pt;line-height:100%'>For you're browsing convenience, an FAQ:</span>

What counts as "ancient"?
This was really meant to be up to you! You're free to use your imagination. Medieval is fine, as is anything before. Even creating you're own is ok. Focus on gameplay.

Is it ok to use this sound/sprite/resource? I'm not sure about copyright?
Not really. Make sure you have permission to use all resources. In most cases this is easy, for music and sounds try googling "Free sounds". In a few situations you're going to have to get in touch with the creator.

Can my game use DLLs?
Yes, just be sure it works with instant play (it normally does), and you're not in violation of copyright.

Help! Instant play isn't working!
Patience, grasshopper. Sometimes it takes up to a day. If that doesn't work search the forums for a solution. As a last resort contact the YYG helpdesk, or email competition ( @ ) yoyogames (dot) com. Don't post here.

What screen resolution should I use? Are we allowed a fullscreen option?
Make sure the windowed game ends up a sensible size on most computers, [not so big that it may as well be full screen, not so small we need to squint]. I'd positively encourage an option to switch to full screen (preferably using F4).

Can I make a 3D game?
Yes (but 2D is easier to do well).

OMG!! I accidently rated a competition game, am I disqualified!?
*sigh* Please try not to do this, just drop an email to competition ( @ ) yoyogames (dot) com with your username and the name of the game you rated, and don't do it again (if at all possible).

You spelt civiliZation wrong, pwned!
Actually, we're English, we can spell it this way if we like. That said, I confess, Zs look better.

Hopefully that covers the worst of them.

Good luck guys,

Jim

EDIT: Current Deadline is: Sunday, May 4, Midnight GMT

Kinda like the Pirate's code.

And thirdly, the code is more what you'd call "guidelines" than actual rules.

If the Bible truly is inspired by God, you would think that somebody as omnipotent and all-knowing would have known to get his message out using TCP instead of UDP.

I may join...

Glad the prizes are still the same. If I win again do I get 2 stars next to my name? =D

I like this theme a lot better because it gives me more freedom (there are many ancient civilisations, or you can just make up your own).

Error on the competition page:
It says second prize gets $750 (in stead of $500), but on the Glog it says "The prize pool remains unchanged at $1750 (split between first, second, and third place)."

Nice theme, different enough from 'winter' but still flexible.

I predict at least 50 Roman platformers though!

But I'll be entering, I hope the pressure will make me finish a game for once.
My Games
PLAN-iT: "It's addictive and has amazing gameplay, well done." "AWESOME GAME!"
Evasion: "Not bad, seemed to me first very simple but its not. " "Very nice game"

Seen a game made with Game Maker in a magazine or newspaper, or on the TV? Then add it to the list of GM Games In Mainstream Media on the YYG Wiki. Currently lists 22 sightings.

I'm in and I'm very glad about the increased time limit, my winter competition entry was badly hurt by it. Also I'm glad that you kept the prizes the same I expected them to be lower since the winter competition was the first.

Good choice of theme this time round, I didn't think the winter theme was that inspiring...

It means that you shouldn't be trying to make Final Fantasy - you should be aiming for something like Bejeweled. The PDF link provided on the YYG site had a pretty in-depth PDF on casual games, and I enjoyed reading it.

They didn't say that it was against the rules to add story, they just encouraged a more casual style of game as opposed to the epic, hard core type of games. Story shouldn't be a problem, as long as you don't over do it.

Ok good.

I have my final idea.

Its a board game (ooh)

You can choose your civilization.
Each civilization has its own base. You have to get to the base and raid it.

Each civilization also has powerups.

Vikings + 2 damage
Tribal + 2 defence
Ancient Indians + I dunno yet
Romans + 1 defence + 1 damage
Greek + 1 damage + 1 speed

MOAR to come.

Because I just so happen to have a project that matches this description.

And because I've been workin' on it for over a year and a half (although I haven't posted it on YYG). This is just the productivity boost I needed!

And because it's amazing. It's not casual, though. It's RTS.
