Alright, I am severly limited in time at the moment, so I am going to make this short:
How would you improve pong? Powerups wouldn't work, because its a first-to-21-points game.

Why won't they work? It's the only thing there is for improving. Or you could always try making 3D Pong

Maybe something like , you play in worlds and each time you win a game you get exp depending on the lvl.

This woud make so you coud increase the bat speed, and increase the ball while hiting the bat.

Try introducing gravity fields.
Every so often they turn on and the ball will then curve around the graviton.
Angling the bat is also a nice addition. As well as moving the bat up and down the players can rotate their bats 360 degrees.

Make it like a two player blasterball. They had powerups, like rockets and gravity feilds. Not sure how that would work in Pong, but you could probably prgram it in. Also ,put in some RPG elements. They make everything better >.>

obstacles could make it funny. like turning the ball into an egg and have a bunch of environmentalists in the center of the room trying to block it, but get thrown aside when the egg hits them.

Pimp your pong paddle!

Yup, the underground Pong Age is here, it's all about low riding paddles with the biggest kits and the flashiest drifts.

And of course then you go all Need For Speed and have some relatively nice looking girl as an intro telling you to not use these moves outside of the game and to always use safety and precaution when playing real pong.

Or not...

But the paddle/ball customization would be cool. As well as going to different worlds when you beat a certain one. (like, having five levels on a world with certain physics and then you move on to a different world with different physics (ball curve say) or whatever)

Yeah, also have obstacles, like others said.
Like balls of flame that when hit by the ball, go flying, and send the bll spinning extremly fast. That way, you have to watch out for the flames and the ball, since the flames can kill you.
Also make it so that you can customize your paddle, as in, make it so that it can shoot laser to deflect the ball, or it can create a sheild, or create an area of low gravity, or even allowing it to alter time, ala Prince of Persia, and it can slow down the ball. There's so much you can do with pong, it makes me wanna make a pong game

The pimp my pong paddle isn't a bad idea. Start out with normal white pong paddles on black BG. And then you can have things you could pimp it with. Like a parody on pimp my ride
