vim
By Polystyrene Man

Name: vim (all lowercased)
Category: Life Simulator/Sandbox
Size: ~1.3MB (Zipped file contains executable and .gm6)
Version: :).1
Changes Resolution: Optional
Mulitplayer: No
Download Link/Screenshots:
On 64Digits (Get the .gm6 here)
On YoYoGames

vim is a life simulator/sandbox type game which allows for you to experiment with various objects. It is NOT an evolution game; rather, it encourages user input and experimentation. vim is also unique in that it allows you to take the driver's seat, being able to take control of any given animal.

The game is open source, and I encourage modding! There are instructions in the file.

Read this if you use Game Maker 7:

I began working on the game over a year and a half ago, so it was programmed in version 6.1. In GM7, c_orange is a real color, so you must delete all instances of 'c_orange=make_color( r , g , b )' from the scripts. I believe it only occurs twice, once in the script init_unit, and once in the script init_water. It would probably just be easier to do a search for 'c_orange'.

Enjoy.

This is really cool. And I really like that menu! I'm going to create some of my own objects now ::wink::.

Awsome :)
Hello everyone. A lot of the files I have uploaded to this site, I did upload to Will Host For Food. I will not be able to reupload the files, because my external hard drive where the files was on, is broken and gone. I'm very sorry.

Also I'm not very active on this forum anymore. I will only make some quick checks from time to time.

Glad to hear that you guys are enjoying the game!

I've uploaded an updated version of the game. This is what was changed:
1. Fixed a bug in the main menu
2. Optimized the game so that it runs faster if the FPS drops below 5
3. Added a new plant which heals animals if they're sick
4. Fixed a minor bug with sugarcane

I forgot to mention this in the first post, but you'll have to download from 64Digits if you want the editable (gm6). YoYoGames only has the executable.

I appreciate the comments!

Was this in the WIP? I just can't remember...
Anyway, d/ling now, and hey Polystyrene do you remember me?

REVIEW:
graphics: yes! I love these graphics. Retro ftw!
sound: I wish there was some audio. That would really make this thing pwn
gameplay: addictive. especially the fire :P

9.4/10 - very nice, high quality, creative

Heh, I forgot I even posted a WIP topic. Maybe because I only received one reply... And I only vaguely remember you. You'll have to remind me how I know you :GM069:

REVIEW
This is very inspiring.
A very good game, one
of the best made with game maker.
Some Comments:

Graphics 6.2/10- Could do better, but they're good.
Music 6.2/10- Probably better off without it :GM127:
Gameplay 9.9/10- Amazing combonations with different order of events, nice job!
Overall 9.7/10- Good Game, should make sequels!

Other Notable Comments
* You should make a sequel and sell that game for $5, maybe Nintendo or some other company will make it into a hit like Inxile did with Line Rider.
* BTW: When you open the *.gm6 :D file for Vim, it has an error when running:
Variable name given or something.
Nice Game! ;)

Here is my modded GM7 version of vim. No more error and I added about 10-15 more objects I think (and fixed the vimPOINTS aswell as a page to display them).

Wow, nice job with that. I hadn't expected anyone to add plants or substances. If it's alright with you, I'll add your mods to the official version (and give you credit, of course).

Funny thing with the vimPOINTS... they aren't broken, I just chose not to use them. Earlier in development, I began a points system based on the various actions that took place in the game. The idea was that having x amount of vimPOINTS would unlock new objects; however, I decided that I wanted everything to be available at the start, as it was quickly becoming less of a game and more of a sim. Still, I'm surprised you found those! You have good eyes.

n64gamer1205: Thanks for the review. I've been pleasantly surprised to find that no one has complained about the lack of music. I actually did whip together some ambient background tunes, but I preferred to play the game without sound.

Brontoman: It's a simulator, so you can really do whatever you want. Press the "+" to add objects to the game, the other two buttons are for more advanced actions.

Appolo: By all means, be my guest. Have fun with it.

Thanks for playing, guys! :)

Downloading, will post when done trying.

EDIT:Whew, that game was fun, and inspired me! I personally had fun with the gunpowder / fire, and placing one animal and 400 leaches! :)
EDIT2:Lightning was fun too!

I think I am done with Game Maker, so if I was working on any projects, they will most likely never get finished.

I am moving on to...

C++
Java

Thanks Polystyrene Man. I appreciate it.

PS - Im currently fixing a bug with the scrolling up & down of the add animals menu. When you scroll to the bottom near the firefly then hit the back button all the objects dissapear (they don't actually, they are drwan "out of the menu area").

Nice work on this. Pretty fun to try out everything, though sometimes I feel it is kind of limited because it will slow down. But still, good job.
