Type: Application

Fullscreen: No

Description: This is a generator to create symmetrical cult symbols! This was originally a program I made on my TI-83 to design an evil organizational symbol for one of my games, but since it was way too slow, I decided to transfer it to the computer. Since it turned out so well, I decided to fix up a few things and release it! So enjoy! (Note: This uses surfaces, so many older computers will not be able to run it)

Screenshots: [1]

Download link: http://www.nfyre.com/symbol.html

edit:
To make simpler symbols, I suggest using a bounding box of 50x50 and use a depth of 50. :GM7:

----------
Updates:
-Fixed dimension exporting bug
-Rectangle being drawn outside the bounding box, rather than on it. (This DOES make a difference)
-Max depth changed to 2500

Oh, and for some reason the surface is drawing a bit off, so it's suggested that you do not use the max bounding box of 150. (This will cause one side of the image to draw on the max boundary, but not the other.

Some pretty great stuff you've got here, and on your site! I've got a program coming up you might be kind of interested in too. PM me

and JTR: Best post ever...If I could put it in my sig (can't fit your pic andthe original post in one frame...) I would...

EDIT: just out of curiousity, were pop-up maker and school stuff made in GM?

Yeah, it actually turned out better than I expected it to ^_^

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I just might do this. However, this was made in about 2 hours, so the coding is really messy, and there are a couple of unused objects. If I clean it up, I might release it :)

This is quite good, and I can't really think of anything to change in it. The generation is fast (and looks cool), and practically every symbol looks good. My only suggestion would be to have 'seeds,' so the player can return to a previously generated symbol. I don't quite know how you would do that, though, because I don't quite understand how this works.

Altogether, excellent programming!

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Well, basically I coded in random 8 directional movement based on a random timer, then included an equation to create a random 10-20 step pattern to repeat continually. Then to draw it I drew a surface the size of the bounding box specified, and mirrored it into 4 quadrants.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Hm, I'm trying your idea of the line gradients. It looks good for a single path, but once the lines start overlapping, it begins to look like crap =P
But as for the thickness idea, that can be easily implemented, however anything over 2 pixels would actually look rather bad, and it'd basically look like a giant blob. So I'm probably going to leave that out :)

Wow...This is really good! Some of them were overly small, but other than that they looked like real symbols! I just have a few suggestions:

possibility of drawing circles
rotational symetry instead of bilateral(a choice)
depths of over 1000
having xmax and ymax actually stop lines from leaving the bounding square

Other than that this is amazing!

Haha, thanks :)
I just updated with a max depth of 2500, and a few bugs with the correct dimensions being outputted when saving the symbol. Also, the xmax and ymax always stopped it from going out of the area, its just that the rectangle was actually covering the edge, rather than being right outside of it. That made it look as though the image was being drawn out of the boundaries, when in reality, it was just drawing underneath the grayed rectangle. The update has this fixed ^_^

Also, since I'm drawing on a surface, rotation of the image is extremely easy. However, when I attempted to do so, the surface rotated on it's top left corner rather than in the center, causing it to go off the screen and block several buttons. So I don't think that's going to be added anytime soon.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Yeah, thats the generic error message people get if their computer doesn't like surfaces. Your best bet is just to reopen it a couple of times, and the error will fix itself. If that doesn't work, then the only way you can get this to work is to play it on someone else's computer.

I like this programme a lot ... its a cool programme.
Here is one I made ...
Posted Image

Few suggesions ...

>Option to change background colour
>Possibility of non 45 or 90 degree turns. (random ... 37 degree, 43 degree ...etc)
>Possibility to select the minimum X and minimum Y.
>Possibility to select minimum and maximum angle
>Possibility to "fill canvas" where the drawing will continue until minimum X to maximum X and minimum Y to maximum Y is covered by line.
>Possibility of shifting centre point ... four lines need not start from the centre ... instead possibility to select x shift and y shift ... so that all four lines start from symmetrical shifted points, resulting in gap at centre.
>Canvas width/length should be independent of maximum X and maximum Y.
>Possibility to generate curves/swirls
>Possibility to select the above options of generation ....
....like [ ]Use Horizontal and Vertical lines
[x]Use diagonals
[x] Allow random angles
[ ] Allow curves and swirls
>Possibility to change brush width
>Allow saving as bmp,jpg and png
>Improved GUI and Logo and banner ... use your cult generated images to do it.

I like this programme a lot ... its a cool programme.
Here is one I made ...
Posted Image

Few suggesions ...

>Option to change background colour
>Possibility of non 45 or 90 degree turns. (random ... 37 degree, 43 degree ...etc)
>Possibility to select the minimum X and minimum Y.
>Possibility to select minimum and maximum angle
>Possibility to "fill canvas" where the drawing will continue until minimum X to maximum X and minimum Y to maximum Y is covered by line.
>Possibility of shifting centre point ... four lines need not start from the centre ... instead possibility to select x shift and y shift ... so that all four lines start from symmetrical shifted points, resulting in gap at centre.
>Canvas width/length should be independent of maximum X and maximum Y.
>Possibility to generate curves/swirls
>Possibility to select the above options of generation ....
....like [  ]Use Horizontal and Vertical lines
          [x]Use diagonals
          [x] Allow random angles
[  ] Allow curves and swirls
>Possibility to change brush width
>Allow saving as bmp,jpg and png
>Improved GUI and Logo and banner ... use your cult generated images to do it.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Thanks for all the detailed suggestions :)
I'll probably add most in for the next version, providing I make a next version (What with sig maker 5 and my billions of W.I.P's)

That was pretty interesting. I set the depth to 2000 and it took a long time for it to complete the picture.

Yeah, I should probably increase the drawing speed as the depth increases so that the image always takes the same amount of time to complete or something like that

maybe another good option is to use curved lines instead of straight ones?
if that is possible with GM...

Also, it would be nice if the file produced was animated showing the drawing sequence... but that would make a large file...

and finally, I received this error:

ERROR in
action number 1
of Draw Event
for object object1:

Trying to use non-existing surface.

must be the resolution change...

Curved lines are indeed possible, I'll try playing around a bit with that concept.
Also, I don't really know why the surface errors occur, some computers just don't work well with them I think.

I'd actually really like to see that game, it'd definitely be interesting! :(
