![]() Zero Hex is a platformer that focuses on figuring stuff out and finding hidden stuff. It's all dark and shadowy; most objects appear as black silhouettes (That's 000000 is in the additive [RGB] color configuring hexidecimal systems used in pretty much any computer image editor you'll ever find, and it's where I came up with the game's name... Not terribly inventive, but... meh.) You play as a cyborg with superhuman powers, the most notable of which is the ability to unleash psychokinetic energy to destroy your foes. Your goal is to destroy a machine that's creating evil robots that are causing chaos in your city. You have to run across the stage, jumping across the tops of buildings, and get to the machine to destroy it. You could just rush through the whole thing and get to the end, but it's much more profitable to hunt out all of the hidden and hard-to-get photon shards-- items that not only heal you slightly but also allow you to create checkpoints that save your progress (you can create a checkpoint every time you get seventeen photon shards). If you finish the game and have collected enough photon shards, you unlock a special survival zone where you survive for as long as you can while destroying as many robots as possible. The main game could take anywhere from ten minutes to several hours to go through, depending on how often you die and how much you hunt for the hidden photon shards (which, I forgot to say, are also sometimes dropped form destroyed robots). I suppose, gameplaywise, it's fairly simple, but not boringly so. Interesting level design (Or at least I tried my hardest to make it interesting; I suppose it's a matter of opinion) and the fact that climbable/kickable walls and doorways are undetectable helps keep things interesting. Well, that's about as much information as you'll need, I expect. Oh yeah: The game runs in an 800 by 600 window and does not change your screen resolution. Since you allegedly need to convert your game or something to get it to work on Vista (dunno, read something about that), it will probably only work on XP or whatever. The file is only a measly 2.87 mb, and it runs relatively fast; so unless you have some absolutely horrendous computer it should be fine for you. Currently it must be downloaded, since I just uploaded it, but in time it should be able to be instant-played. This is the link to the yoyogames page: Zero Hex Rate it and stuff! Tell your friends about it! Please? |

I'm not sure exactly what to say. This feels more like a WIP to me. I understand it's the style of the game, but it's just too dark. The controls for the most part are ok, but the climbing thing kind of feels forced. A story would help too. It doesn't feel like there's a real purpose of something to do. Might be me though.

I love this game, its a bit too hard for me, and also a bit too dark, but i still loved it, it just had some charm when you walked inside rooms and the windows lid op.
The animations where really lowly, espiacily when climbing a wall or running in to a wall and fell to the ground. When i say that its too hard its not a critic but more a personal opinion, when jumping it seamed like the acceleration where the exat same as when running. -i could stand still on the ground, jump op and then take of in a direction like a rocket, i think it would be better if you had the vertical speed that you where running with when jumping, like if you stand still you just jump stright op, and if you where running you would jump over the screen. enyways this thing where just charming, and i there for give this a 8/13 |

Yes, I did some pretty unorthodox stuff with the general movement... every observation there was pretty much correct; not sure if I'm going to change it because I kinda like it unique (though really weird) that way.
The comments about the darkness have been noted, though. I'll make an option for a lighter background. This post has been edited by PurpleSquerkle: Feb 19 2008, 12:39 AM |

As far as I know there are no rules against resurrecting an obscenely ancient topic, especially if there's an update involved.
Probably nobody has noticed; I've added the ability to change the background brightness using the function keys on the main menu. Can people please give this game a try? I know it's not that great, but it's at least pretty good. |

I think it deserves the word "Spiffy".
