Hi! This is TRIALS tech test demo. It's using the GmPhysics DLL. I finally figured out how to make a rag-doll rider, so I decided to release a demo of some sort. I want to thank torigara for the help with the bike axels. Anyway - here's a screenshot:
Posted Image
There's still some jerky movement when the rider falls from the bike, but I'll get that fixed in next releases. The level is a bit small, but it's only for testing purposes anyway.

Here's a new release:
Download (ultrashare)
I have made some changes to the physics.
Added a simple menu.
Another thing added is that the physics dll is not being loaded at the beggining of the game, but at the beggining of the level and after the end of the level - it's being unloaded. It's either this or after 30 restarts the "fall through the floor" bug appears. With this dynamic loading the physics are reset at the beggining of every level and there shouldn't be any problem.
Also somewhat fixed the shoulder joint, so no more "zombie hands" when the player falls ;)
Also this demo shows the game's rules, I talked about - 5 tries on each level (still only one level though :( )

deserves more attencion 9/10! I ride trials myself on a Sherco 2.5 (250cc). Its not realistic, and it looks more like Bicycle Trials physics, but your far from realistic. I'll do bike sprites for you if you want?

I'm glad you liked it, guys.

@picc84 - thanks for your offer, but I'll deal with graphics myself ;) Define not realistic. Witch part do you have in mind? (Graphics, Physics?) Tell me exactly what needs tweeking, so I can work on it for future releases. Of course, every thing needs work, but I need to know what exactly you have in mind.

@twisted games - The idea of the final gameplay will be to get from one side of the stage to the other, so I don't think a reverse button will do much good in that situation.

Thanks for your interest in this project.

I'd much rather explain over Aim or Msn, but heres some basic's.
@Physics
You should not be able to lift your tires off the ground, by leaning. MOSTLY the front. Maybe with throttle you could lift the back up. but otherwise no.
The only way this could be done, is transferring weight front than back, multiple times.

Right! I thought there was something buggy there. I'll get right on that, picc84. So as I understand, when standing in one place, the rider shouldn't be able to lift the tyres, but when you move, press the brake and lean forward - you can lift the back; and when you press the throttle and lean back, you can lift the front. I'll also work on some better graphics for the following release. Thanks for helping out, picc84!

it's a lot of fun but way too easy to flip.
for graphics i'd say grab graphics from the internet and use an alpha mask for smoother edges.

make an online dirt bike game.

Fantastic, engine was very solid, no bugs at all, perfect!
Hmm my advice is not to use internet sprites, much cooler with original sprites.

That is awesome! Here's what i think you should do!

Make a 2d platformer matt haffman game, with like jumps, a tabletop, and like you can go left and right, as well as grinding and everything!

Those animations are mad! keep it up!

Here's an update:

This is trials tech demo v2.
I worked a bit more on the graphics and physics. Added a smoke effect from the exhaust.
I made a new level for the test.
Here's the download link:
Download
@hotshotscott - I'm sorry, Scotty, but I'm going to have to dissapoint you in that matter. This game is going to be devoted strictly to the trials bike. I have a somewhat developed engine with a BMX bike though, but it's verry buggy and I don't have the time do work on it right now.

And on the matter of sprites: Well I'm going to make all the graphics myself :medieval:

very well done, this reminds of of those games from www.teagames.com which were very similar to this

just a small funny thing is that his arms don't really have any elbow joints so they just stay still when he dies...it's prbably hard to make them so i'm not insiting that you put elbows in, it's just funny

PS put the updated version on the first link aswell(i downloaded both)

Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. Ok, I updated the first post with the new download link.

@Black-Hawk - I'm glad you like the game, and yes, it is inspired by teagames's bike games. About the arms of the rider - there is an elbow joint and a sholder joint, but they are limited, so it apears that the arm parts are welded. I tried to remove the limitation of the joints when the player falls, but as soon as that happens the game crashes, so I'll have to figure another way to do it.

before I download *because I have to wait for the stupid timer to count down* I suggest you should change your mirror. it's a horrible site and awful way to download.
will edit with comments.

edit-
after playing, it is better with the graphics and physics of the bike but still not entirely realistic. it's bad that when you roll backwards, even slow, and you hit your head or back on a rock and you die...

then it's also bad how you can be falling backwards and lean forward to correct it. leaning backwards as in like: \ angle with the front wheel on top.

finally...for some reason, after about 30 restarts, I continued to fall through the ground directly below starting position. I restarted from there twice or so and finally it locked up.

oh yeah...when you fall off, his arm sticks straight up. lol.

ugh...last thing I think. when you've fallen off your bike, you can press up and smoke will come out even though the bike doesnt move.

Its fun, but even if you fall off the bike you can still win :) I went off that big cliff and the bike fell on top of me and i won. Also, an error addressed earlier is probably caused if you're using GM 7. GMPhysics isnt compatiblie with GM 7

Ok, Thank you all for taking a look at the game. I was thinking of releasing a version with some minor changes, but there is a lot to fix, so I'll work on the suggested improovements and release it after that. Frist thing will be to revert the engine back to gm6 (thanks, blah). The bug with the welded arms is already fixed. The smoke that comes out when the bike is not mooving and the player has fallen is easy to fix. I noticed the "falling through the ground after 30 restarts", but I have no idea why it's happening. Hopefully it'll get fixed when I revert the game to gm6.

@Hughie - What do you have in mind by "PM me the engine"?

P.S. I changed to that host because something was wrong with rocket-soft, but I'll get a better host for next version.
Thanks again for looking.

Alright, here's the deal. I reverted the game to gm6, and it reacts exactly the same way as the gm7 version. So I guess there's no need for the game to be developed in gm6, because gm7 seems to support GmPhysics exactly the same way. So, Newly Discovered, gm7 it is :) This still leaves the falling through the ground problem and I really don't have an idea how to fix that. Other minor bugs are being fixed, and a real demo will be released soon :) I'm thinking of adding another stage, but it'll take some time, because I have to write down the coordinates of every point from the level polygon.

P.S. slinky6, thanks for the kind words ;)

P.P.S Just because I don't want any confusion to ocure - gm6 version didn't fix the falling through the level bug, and also doesn't have draw_line_width function, witch makes the developing of the game a whole lot harder. That's why I choose to continue developement under gm7.

all righty, picc84 ^_^ I'll PM you some details about the levels.

@gmuser- first try to lean back and use the throttle to get the front tyre over the first rock. When you manage to do that, try to transfer the weight from back to front a few times while adding throttle. That should be a good start point for you :(

P.S. I'm clearing the game's rules - the levels will be composed of 5 stages, for the whole level you get 5 tries (resets). Every reset will get you to the beggining of the stage, not the level, so it's a bit easier that way ;)
So far I made the whole system work, and added a simple menu. Now before every level the physics engine is being loaded (not at the beggining of the game) and after the end of the level it is unloaded, so it can be reset.

Very well done! Nice us of GMphysics, especially seeing how you are using the old engine. Quite realistic. The graphics are awesome too, even for such a small level it was very detailed. Thanks for this!

This will turn out to be something really successful, I know it. Keep going!
By the way, can you add a bit more leaning? I mean, I know that other trails games have way too much leaning - really unrealistic - but this has an unrealistically little amount of leaning. I know that you have more flexibility/movement on a trials bike then that. :) Other then that, it was great!

Keep it up!

Hi, mr. Gibblet. There are joints in the knees. Actually there are joints on the following locations: waist, knees, shoulders and elbows. If there weren't joints there, the whole acting of the rider would be like a wooden doll. The joints are just limited, so they won't move. Problem is, when the rider falls and i remove the limits on the joints the game crashes. That's why they are still limited when the player falls. I'm trying to get rid of this problem, but so far - nothing...

Its probably better than some of the ones on miniclip. Sure it aint that realistic. flips are really easy to do! but it is awesome fun. i especially like the fact that the rider actually falls off in the way that he is hit. great physics engine.
I hope it comes along well.

Thanks for the comments, guys.

@Keth - Yes, I'm using GmPhysics v3.

@flyingfoxgoggles - I'm working on the physics to make them realistic, though I really can't see how flips are easy to do on the latest version... Hmmm... I've reduced the force so much, that it's barely possible to lift the front tyre... It's weird how it responces differently... I'd like to get more responce on that matter so I can clear that out.

@Senar - The game is inspired by teagames's TG Motocross. It's one of my favourite games on the net :)

Thanks again!

well when you jump off the rock onto the platform on the test level, if you hold right down then you can flip real fast. probably coz of kinetic energy in your engine or something.

The new version is alot worse than the orginal physics in my opionon, maybe more realistic but at what point do you substitute realism for fun....?

But the first version was great I played it for about 2 hours.
v2 was horrible, I think you should go back to original physics.
