Another fine show.

Eyas:

Looking forward to you coming back. Ease up on the pr0n downloads and you won't be blowing your bandwidth as well as other things.

Zack:

You did fine, but stop with the self-deprecation. Sure introduce yourself, and lets hear a little about you. But don't be focusing on the negatives. When you started talking about yourself and lack of experience and were just a D&Der, etc. that doesn't instill confidence and credibility. Who cares that you haven't been using GM for as many years as others or most of your efforts are in D&D.

Robin had enough confidence in you to stand in for Eyas and that's good enough. Thanks for stepping up. Like I said earlier, you did great.

Robin:

Consider, interviews with some of the more distinguished people in the Game Maker community. Perhaps a moderated short debate.

I preferred the longer 30 minute format, maybe instead of 15 minutes weekly, a half-hour every 2 weeks. It's important that you don't burn yourself out and ensure that topics are fresh and interesting.

We couldn't get any non-GM contributions. If we get enough, we'll consider a quarterly non-GM mag.

About the length, some people are saying 30 minutes is too much, others are saying its the sweet spot. So we might have to experiment back and forth to get the right time.

As for the frequency, a lot of topics come up in a week.. Weeks with little news could be replaced by interviews, etc.

Thanks for the comments, I did notice that quite a bit. Listening to the podcast reminded me of the aspects of podcasting that I need to work on, such as stuttering and generally not thinking too much before I talk. Next podcast if I'm on, I try to work on those sorts of things. I think I approached it from a personal angle when I should approach it from a more analytical, curious, informative angle. Also, I need to do a bit more preparation beforehand than I did, such as reading over all the topics. ;) In general though, thanks for the comments and suggestions, and I'm glad you enjoyed the cast!

Topics then... perhapse you could discuss the usage of data structures in computer sciences (specifically in game maker) I know for me at least this is one of the most important aspects of game design.

I'd love to have such topic, but do you have any idea on how to come about it? I mean.. just discuss the general users, or perhaps some applications, etc?

Personally I enjoy the computer sciences bit, not just applications but theory if you know what I mean, but for the general GM community you'd probably do best to stick with application and usage, perhapse you could compare the speed of lists to arrays, or explain about how data structures are implemented in pre-compiled code while arrays and vars are scripted. There is a whole host of possibilities!

I'd say your best bet to get an audience here would be do discribe each of the structures supported by default in GM and give examples of how each of them could be used in games, about how they are abstracted from real world phenomenon, their pros and cons, etc.

(Abstraction might be a great topic to cover actually, that might satisfy the more advanced and generall listener)

Regards,
- Leif

We thought about talking about 'member of a week', but the idea seemed biased. Maybe when it turns into something 'fun' it could be done, yeah.

I dunno how much I could actually help out with this topic, though I could do some with organizing data within your game as to easily access it (arguments like longer, easy to understand names versus short yet confusing names; specifics, like how to organize menus; and other similar parts of game organization). In general, I'd be more interested in doing something on overall design. Perhaps we could focus on breaking out of the game mold, seeing as a large portion of games around now are clones or stereotypical generic games that are rather formulaic. Another neat topic to cover could be the option of online gaming versus split-screen and other multiplayer options on a single computer. Also, the specifics on level design, as well as difficulty curves. Would these be things you (the listener) would be interesting in hearing discussed?

I like the idea of discussing game learning curves and level design could be neat too, but I'm not sure how you could really discuss that without a visual aid.

It certainly sounds hard, obviously as podcasts are different medium they have different limitations from those of a magazine. Since GMKing have both, I'm sure someone can work out the best way to do it.
