I've seen way too many fan games on this forum and it really bothers me..
Any comments? Does it bother some of you as well? Having just a few is a little less annoying than almost everyone making one, am I right? Theres: > Mario > and many many others... EDIT: It seems time to take action: I want them separate too! If anyone wants the forums for these kinds of games in a separate forum too, just put this in your signature: CODE I vote for making a separate forum for Fan Games, 3D Games and for People's First Games. If you are also feeling this way paste this into your signature.

Yes. It bothers people and has been discussed an amazing amount of times, all resulting in the conclusion that we can't do anything about it and some of the games are actually quite good...

Oh, I hadn't seen this subject anywhere in the forum! (Maybe I forgot to search all the pages)...UGH! Well, Maybe there should be a rule about what kind of games can be made...Like maybe people should make up their own? This post has been edited by George Williams: May 31 2007, 08:08 AM |

...make up their own rules?
Or make their own games? Anyway if you have a problem with this, tell a mod. Don't feel it's your duty to report it here. (Contradiction to the max) |

QUOTE ...make up their own rules? Or make their own games? I meant that maybe people should come up with their own ideas for games and should make up their own character and everything! It's just a thought and it should be a RULE! |

QUOTE (George Williams @ May 31 2007, 01:07 AM) Well, Maybe there should be a rule about what kind of games can be made...Like maybe people should make up their own? What would be the point of that? Being annoying and boring isn't an inherent property of fan games. Being able to borrow from and build off of a previous game design (and in some cases graphics, audio etc.) generally results in a higher quality game, if anything. If you find them annoying, well, I don't think that is sufficiently universal or objective as to justify a rule prohibiting them. |

Ha! You really think big companies like Nintendo etc give a care that people are re-making their game? It's free publicity and the maker will never earn money off it. If anything, it's a good thing for them, surely?

Most of the games people are copying are copyrighted and if they were to be caught they would go DOWN for sure. Firstly, there is such a thing as legal use of copyrighted work. I know a number of people who have completed fan game projects with permission), and some of them even made a little cash (usually only indirect revenue, but revenue nonetheless). Also, if you want my commentary on copyright violations - link. |

There are some high-quality fangames. And just like Grego said, Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft won't take action against small game developers who make fangames as long as they aren't being sold.

But seriously you haven't really been around long enough to be making 'I have had enough of XYZ type topics' and even if you had been around for ages it won't necessarily change anything. |

There should not be any rule on that. Personally, I with a few member of this forum adore well-made fan games.
This topic does not bear any significance if you ask me. I you hate them, dont download. |

As far as I know, Pacman is copyrighted as well: http://gmc.yoyogames.com/index.php?showtopic=301194&hl= There's nothing wrong with having your opinion, but try not to have a hypocritical one. Personally, I think fangames are fine. Few here are selling games, and even fewer are capable of making something that would compete with the original in any way. Still though, because of legal issues some may want to avoid them. But it's really up to maker. Just like its up to the player to download, or ignore the topic. Fangames thrive because they rarely get ignored. |

There is more anti-fangame topics than actual fangames.

QUOTE Fangames thrive because they rarely get ignored. Indeed, that's the main problem. It's not the amount of fangames that are made, but it's the amount of people that respond to those fangames that are the problem. If no-one would respond to them (the crappy fangames, the good ones should still be responded to), they would sink in the oblivion of forgotten topics.-- TC |

QUOTE (Kapser @ May 31 2007, 01:15 PM) I considered this. You don't see as many fan games as people seem to find. I don't know where you're all finding this abundance of fan games but there aren't as many as people often imply. Though I accept, there are a fair few of them. |

So maybe what we need is a fan games forum seperate to the finished games forum.

If nobody replied they would just bump their topic back to the top. Well you miss the fact that most feedback is anything but constructive. It's annoying to see a crappy game -fangame or not- being bumped back to the first page just because someone had to say 'This game sucks'. And if noone replies and the creator keeps bumping, the topic gets locked. This post has been edited by 9_6: May 31 2007, 12:38 PM |
