Or will the converter be a trainer with the executable stored within it?
*
Less likely, because the content is compressed and since the de-compressor is incompatible with Vista it won't even start.
*

I don't think the whole content is compressed, if it was so, then the "converter" itself would be incompatible with Vista.. unless a new version of the compressor was released, that is.

Anyways, I think the runner itself is compressed, not the rest of the content.

Sorry, that is what I meant; the runner is compressed. But GM7 don't use compression.

I'm curious, though, what compressor did GM6 use? Is it UPS or something else.

Think I've read somewhere it was zlib, although I am certain it isn't U.P.S.

Or did you just tread in a banana and fell?

ResHack can check the compression method, right?

Try this

Right click the exe -> properties -> compatibility -> run in compatibility mode for "Windows XP"

I have not tested because I do not have Vista. Although, it seems to work with other programs out there so it may work for you.

This doesn't work

Yes it is zlib. Ask TGMG.
And yes UPS exists as a compressor apart from a power supply (very funny DD wink1.gif ).

I'm sure Prof Mark considered the problems I asked about, but I just posted just to be sure.

@ esh_corp, the post after mine, I'm not saying Mark should worry about himself, he may as well decompile all games ever created in GM, without breaking the licence. My concern is about those using his tool, (I mean the bad guys).

Regards to all,
Christian

I am sure Mark won't decompile, but simply decompress.

According to what I have understood, you shouldn't worry at all.

What this "converter" would actually use is remove the runner, add a new runner which isn't compressed. The actual 'compiled' source for your game wouldn't even be modified in the first place.

That is exactly what will happen. Is it violating the EULA? I don't think so because it does not decompile anything. It just cuts the file in two parts and glues the second part to a new runner.

Anyway, a first beta test version can be downloaded from:

http://www.gamemaker.nl/GM_Convert_Game.zip

Please use with care. This version has not been tested at all (because I do not have Vista available). Please report the results here.

This program is just a quick hack without any error checking or anything.

The program doesn't entirely work. It works, but only if I end a process for another program :S

I don't know if it applies to all GM6 games, but what happened to me was:
game.exe opened, then disappears,
something called "grind.dll" takes up 100% CPU, and the game doesn't execute.

If I do "end prcoess" for grind.dll, the game executes.

edit: See my newer post.. it works apparently
