This game needs balance.
Does the 'attack' value displayed below the level actually influence aything?
Some spells are utter crap, they cost much and deal almost no damage while other spells cost almost nothing and kill everything.

There was also no difference in the element of the spell.
Shooting a shadow-thing with a shadow spell didn't affect the damage dealt.
I would cut down the number of spells and make them upgradeable instead, maybe adding element based damage (lightning>water>fire>earth) so you don't always cling to one ultimate spell.

The final spell was way too powerful and without it, beating the last boss depends on your luck because of the random shooting patterns.
Nothing happens after beating the final boss -except that you can't fight it again... WHY?- add at least a staffroll or something.

I still have alot to learn about game design. number one is that people exspect something when they beat the game and I didn't give that to them in deep magic. Some people like other spells more than others and I got them as balanced as I could (I still need work in this area). I couldn't do the element effects because I didnt build it into the engine but I did think about that after I had started the game. I might add that into the second one though it would add some depth. Thank you for the Super feedback.

Man, this game has so much potential. Keep it up, Excalibur.

There are a few things that I would like to see fixed in this game:

-Could you make it fullscreen-able? I get annoyed with my mouse going out of the window.
-I would like some more "reactions" in objects. If the bad guys actually looked like they got hit, it would be more satisfying. Also, it would be nice for the buttons to "bleep" or something when you hit them (just so you know they worked) and the main character should also jump back or something when he gets hit (perhaps, if you made more damage come to him, he could go invincible for a second or so)
-For some reason, it counted me as one level higher than I was from lvl 12 on up (In other words, I could do the lvl 13 spell at lvl 12. Maybe it happened before this, I am not sure).
-The story line could be developed - I like either a long storyline or no storyline at all
-I would like to see some more varied spells (such as more defensive). Be creative! This is especially true for the earlier levels.
-The music could really use some improvement. It is bland and does not at all add to the game. If you want, I could make you some more high-quality MIDIs. (PS: Where did you get them? Did someone make them for you or did you get them off of a site?)
-Make more of the game!

Some things that were really good:

-The experience fits perfectly. You gain a lot at the beginning, and will need to double back on a few levels to up it a little bit before certain areas. Perfect.
-The difficulty setting seems very well-tested.
-The concept of using so many different spells is great
-The particle effects, though not professional, add to the game quite a bit

Keep it up! And when I say that, I mean develop this game as much as possible!

*monocledsardine - Thank you for all the awesome ideas. I am making a Deep Magic 2 and I will use all of the feedback you gave me to improve it. I wrote all of the music myself, I was a little limited on time and so all of it is very simple, whitch I thought would match the rest of the game. What do you mean by bland? I don't understand that word. I Also found out that it lets you use a spell that you shouldn't be able to use I just can't fix it now though (The game is being judged in a contest) I will probably fix it later though.

*thakiller26 - Good Idea.

Thanks again for the great feedback this is what i like to see from GMC users.

Excalibur333 I'll edit this when I've tried the game. (Just downloaded. Looks like fun.)

I wanted to ask, have you played "Doriath" on c64? It also has an underground wizard.
Image: http://www.c64gg.com.../Doriath.ss.gif
Fanpage: http://members.shaw....oriath/Main.htm

EDIT: Ok. I haven't opened the fifth stage yet, (Still grinding myself to lvl 15. I'm at 13 now.) but I'm liking the game so far. Nice music, too. Good work.

A few suggestions to Deep Magic 2:
-A more distinguishable sound when a new level has been reached.
-The Wizard should scream/bleed/do something when he gets hurt.(To inform the player.)
-Not quite as much level grinding. A little is okay.
-Faster regeneration at mana/health pools.

That's all for now. I'm looking forward to your future games. :D

I must admit that the spell screen was a bit overwhelming. You should try cleaning it up a bit. Possibly graying out the locked spells.

Even though it has its flaws, this is an above average game here on the GMC.

That is a good idea, BBaller.

I think, Excalibur, that most of the downfalls in the game are with detail - if you really went into detail with the graphics - so that the game seems to fit the controls better (eg. making all the unable-to-use spells gray would make the game a bit easier to use, and "reactions" of all objects when hit would add a lot to the intuitiveness of the controls) - this would be a much better game than it already is.

*monocledsardine - Thank you for all the awesome ideas. I am making a Deep Magic 2 and I will use all of the feedback you gave me to improve it. Bland means lacking flavor. Basically, I don't like your music because it is TOO simple. This might be OK for the portal level (the one you start out in), but it is most certainly inappropriate to have only one or two instruments playing at a time for a boss theme or a title theme. Again, if you don't have time, I could make you up some (post a reply to this if you want some of my examples). I specialize in orchestral-sounding MIDIs and MP3s.

However, I could use some ideas on better midi sequencers I could use and some feedback on how to write better music (I haven't been doing it very long). If you could help me with that It would be great.

I hope I don't offend you but I really like to do my games myself. Thanks. :)

Just as a note, I think that the regeneration rate in mana and health pools is fine - however, it is annoying because you have to stand at a precise place on the mana/health regenerator (which is sometimes hard to find).

I hope I don't offend you but I really like to do my games myself. Thanks.
Excalibur

No offense taken - I understand this completely. I'm not sure what sequencer you use for MIDIs, but I'll edit this post to write my preferences.

Edit: I like using Sibelius and Finale, which are both actually music notation programs not originally designed for making MIDIs. However, they are extremely fast to use, and allow the composer to write out music with all the channels in constant consideration. However, they are not suggested for anyone without sufficient musical background.

Well I have taken piano for 10 years and violin for 7 so I think I will be able to handle them (hopfully). I will check into those thanks. I was just using the Jazz Midi sequencer and I also had to write the songs very fast so they had to be simple.

Here's a little review.

Gameplay:
Simple, yet effective would be the best way to describe it. Most enemies are well balanced, and you seem wel ballanced compared to them. Sometimes some monsters can have too much health, like the turrets in the 4th level.
This can result in making you wait endlessly for you mana to return if you spent it on earlier monsters. I suggest to not make the mana regeneration continue while casting, but make it faster when you are not casting or so? Or you could make potions items you can pick up and use later, instead of instant refilling you. I'd like to see a boss at the end of a level, and maybe some more stages in one level, to make sure you don't get bored leveling to get to the next stage, continuasly doing the same level.
A well deserved 50 to 60.

Graphics:
As the gameplay, so simple, yet so effective. All those monsters have such a charm to them. Maybe some more variety in the tilesets? The particle effects do their job perfectly.
16 to 20

Music and Sound:
Something I was less happy about. The tones were to monotomous. Make em either longer, or add more. And more then one tone, give it some base, an under tone, maybe some drums and all that. The sounds werent bad, but they didn't blow me away.
8 to 20

An overall great game, the only thing it misses out a bit on is the sound.

This game was easily memory hacked.I beat the game and decided to test every thing I could and that ment 100000 health.Just for future reference.....

1.Encypting varibles and when assecsing decyprt them to slow people like me down.

2.Make it so the heath bar and mana bar cant display past the area its supposed to.This would make it so hackers wouldnt notice it so much and it might fix a bug also.

3.I didnt understand half your coding so I couldnt change it.Thats a good thing as long as you can read it.I could line up all the coding and try but Im not going to that exenct.

4.Hide your scripts from the momory if you are concered about your part effects.

5.Look up how to hide your game from memory with a dll. That would fix all of the above.

Also It seems that you had the player hold the HP and such. That reset the adress so i couldnt make a trainer. The adress changes so I cant use the same address normaly if I exit and load again.

Also I will rate your game.....

I used your game as a test.If you want I can help with Deep Magic 2.You probably dont want or need help but PM if you want. Also why do you use so many instances.
You could use varibles to display sprites and set power and speed and such. Also It is a great game other than how long it takes to lv up.Thats why I tested with your game :medieval: .

Other than hacking your game it was well made.I dont understand the save file format. Is it encytped. It so good job with doing that.

Why not use so many instances. It is faster to program this way (at least for me) and you can use parent objects for "like" actions. Every other part of the game was small so using lots of instances didn't lag the game or make it super big. I don't know how I made the save files harder to hack. :medieval: I guess gamemaker does that on its own. Thanks for the comments.

Nope, You can make one if you want and I think and archer would be sweet. Maybe an archer slash mage so that he could enchant his arrows to do certain things. I don't even care if you look at my code to learn from it. If you need any help, PM me I might be able to help also (although I am starting on DM2 today, it is going to be awsome). He He... I'm making a game similar to Deep Magic, but with more spells (50 of them). All thanks to Excaliber333 for sending me some code. THANK YOU EXCALIBER!!! I'm going to try to enter my game in a cage match. I'm going to release a Beta Demo-Version of my game in about 2 weeks.
