I am in progress of creating a similar Callisto game (a better approach by learning from previous developemental mistakes) but I'm not sure if I would be able to complete it... I'm just not on that much anymore; I work on gamemaker at most once a week. :\ It's mainly a small activity I do when I am completly bored.

I may release a source code sometime, it of course won't be the original game but something close. But for now I guess I can consider it abandonware.

Galaxy Generation

New version 0.2! Use the mouse wheel to zoom out of a solar system view, then click on one of the brighter stars (not a pixel) and then use the mousewheel to zoom back in on that system.

The game will be a strategy game where you populate the galaxy and terminate/trade with other civilizations. It will be very customizable, you can create your own ships and flag. You can decide whether to dominate the galaxy or be diplomatic.

I'm also looking for some input as to graphics and gameplay.

Now a big thing about this is that nothing is drawn to scale and there is no realistic physics. If things were actually drawn to scale, it would be very hard to navigate through the system, and there could be constant zooming in and out to view things. The sun is drawn about 10 times what its size would be if the distance between planets were true, and planets are drawn about 200-300 times larger than they would be to the same ratio, and moons are really not drawn to scale. I kind of like the exaggeration anyway.

I have made all graphics in the game mostly using paint shop pro and getting some basic textures off generic sites. All 'objects' so far are drawn using primitives and vertice shading.


Hold F1 for controls!

Now:
- Fast scroll in and out from solar system to galaxy view.
- Fast galaxy generation, about 60-100 stars.
- Quick procedural solar system generation.
- No planet/moon is alike (to some point).
- Solar systems are realistic as far as planet statistics and positioning go.
- Many features like inhabitable planets, gas giants, rings, asteroid belts, dust clouds, etc.

Future:
- Main gameplay, strategy type.

No I havent heard of the series or the Ur-Quan Masters. What type of gameplay?

It's mainly explorin new planets and solar systems, recource gathering, selling recources, buying improvements to your mother ship, helping or fighting other races in the galaxy,
collecting artifacts and fighting realtime one ship against another.

I recomend trying the game. smile.gif
It was chosen as one of the greatest game in a few places.

The Ur-Quan Masters is a free version of star control 2 and exactly the same.

I don't think I want it to be that type of game. I think it will be some sort of strategy/rts-mixed game. Create your own race/corp/nation and conquer the galaxy type of thing with a lot of customization. (custom stations, ships, logo, etc.)

- You will have to get resources/gain control of for building and a source of income. Also compete with other races/corps/nations in different ways like war, or economic competition, or become their ally.

I am almost finished with the galaxy generation. It is all realtime and all in one room. Just zooming in to stars and back out to the galaxy with the mouse wheel. It will be out soon.

I'm replying now to hopefully get more reviews...

I would recomend using something like that to create a 4X game (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit and eXterminate)

Which is what Civilization, Galactic Civ or my personal favourite Space Empires III & IV are.

If you've played Civ before you'll understand the game play (turn based) but in games like SE or GC you are able to have ALOT more customization from minute race details to constructing all parts of your ships, creating alliances, trade treaties etc etc.

The "game" looks great though smile.gif I just kinda wish I hadn't mentioned making it a 4x game because I was hoping to be the first to make a 4x GM game but this looks too good to pass up the chance for some one to make a good quality game smile.gif

Although does this only generate one random solar system? Would it be hard for you to say generate a few different solar systems or even a galaxy with this engine?

I have played Civilization II, III and IV. So I was thinking of some kind of civilization-type game, but I don't really like the idea of turn-based gameplay, so probobly something like an rts but its still in concept.

I have made the galaxy engine (randomly generated all the time of course, with spiral-type formations), it isn't a giant galaxy, only with about 100-200 stars in it. I just have to put a few more graphical touches before I release that part, but it takes about a minute or two on my computer to generate the whole galaxy which includes all 100+ stars. So, going from system to galaxy will be immmediate and there won't be any room switching.

However there still isn't any real gameplay, I want a solid system that can be 'molded' and changed easily to be compatible with customizable(-ish) gameplay. I think that starting with a solid core is the best way to go before adding in all of the tedious, complicated objects and gameplay that go along with it.

I didn't know it was taken. I'll just change the name, I wasn't sure about it anyway. I haven't seen the game so I didn't copy it.

There are few words to describe how AWESOME this is. I must have been navigating around the 'galaxy' for twenty minutes just to see how many livable planets were out there. (I think I got to about 50 when I realized that this engine was unbelievable)

I am very excited about this. The only thing that I'd add would be faster scrolling between planets in a solar system, or maybe an option to do so. I don't know, it was still fun just to browse around. When I zoomed in REALLY close, I spotted rotation/revolution in the planets, and the names of the planets and that music just put the strawberry on top.

I can't wait to see how awesome of an RTS/strategy game you're going to make this into. It kind of reminded me of Spore and an old NES game I think was called Overlord, except WAY cooler.

Thank you for your comments. I spent a lot of time setting up the polygons and graphics. Just wait until the next demo is out and you can destroy planets and moons (I like the animation of them exploding, you can see a preview in my avatar and signature).

I'm glad that you could browse around the galaxy for twenty minutes and like the scenery. There are a lot of habitable/earth-like planets so there is more of a variety of planets instead of just dead rocks. By the way, some planets have clouds that revolve and rotate with the planet too.

I probobly won't add the temperature and other statistics to the stars because it would just be unecessary and complicated. That is why I took out most/all showing of statistics of the planets. But I could add the size of stars and number of planets just to show some kind of stats.
