http://www.amigachap.../blazing_wings/

I would like to present you what I did with Game Maker, a remake of my all time favourite vertical shoot'em up on the Amiga and the Atari STe : Wings of Death a vertical scrolling shooter.

I have filtered graphics with Kreed's SuperEagle filter to obtain a doubled resolution.

Digital voices have been remade.

And Nils Schneider, a german musician, is remixing every musics.

Today, I have released the 0.5.2 version with level 1 to 5 playable (download musics here).

The original game has 7 levels, but I will create an eighth bonus level where you will have to face Sagyr's greatest ennemy : Xandrillia in an ultimate and deadly fight.

I hope you will love the game... <_<

Controls :
Arrows and Space bar to shoot.
F4 for full screen.

File Size: 5.32 Mb without musics (eight MP3 for 39.4 Mb) (stored in a folder)
GM Version: GM6.1
Screen Resolution: 640 x 480 for the title screen and 576 x 400 for the game screen

Nice look, although you might want to change the font of the score display (the '13600' in the screenshot), it really sticks out among all those other pretty pictures. Does this play properly if you don't download all the MP3s?

I am about to make the score display looks better. I just need to rip the original font or create a new one. :(

Yes, you can play the game without downloading the musics. <_<

Well done Aligarion. I am enjoying the sprites :). Though I realize that you did not create them, it's still very pleasant. I am curious, since I've never seen the original, does it play like the Amiga version?

Because it does have a little of that stiffness in terms of gameplay, similar to 1945. I mean no offense of course, I'm just wondering if it is accurate to the original.

Well done Aligarion.  I am enjoying the sprites :D.  Though I realize that you did not create them, it's still very pleasant.  I am curious, since I've never seen the original, does it play like the Amiga version?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Actually, I tried to make the gameplay as accurate to the original as I could. ;)

Scrolling and bullets are as slow as the emulated Amiga version (I think they are :D )

For the sprites, like backgrounds, they have been ripped from the Amiga version and filtered with Kreed's SuperEagle filter and then I have had to rework each of them (only in level 1 and 5) to make them smoother. Level 2 to 4 sprites are not yet reworked. :)

I figured as much. I know that those old shooters tend to have slightly sluggish controls, which isn't necessarily bad .

It's also easy to forget that the older hardware wasn't always capable of processing things so quickly.

I didn't actually make it past the first stage. I'll have to try again when I have some time. I like the title screen in particular, ha ha, that some nice sprite work.

Keep up the good work, and maybe throw up a second screenshot up there?

I hope you're not giving it a 7/10 because there's no music. Because if you are, then you should look at the download options a little more closely .

You have to download musics in the "Download" section and store MP3 in the "Musics" folder of the game. :D

I chose that solution to spare my bandwidth. :D

I hope you will give me at least an 8/10 with Nils Schneider's excellent remixes. :)

Two more levels will be ripped from the original game and I will create a final level (shorter) where you will have to fight Xandrilia (Sagyr's enemy). ;)

Unfortunately, I just had no more time to spend in the game for one year.
I think the bonus level will have to wait a little bit before I could release it... :GM006:

Hi,

It is my pleasure to release a brand new version of Blazing Wings (1.1.0).

http://www.amigachap.../blazing_wings/

Posted Image

What's new in this release :

- New level 8 playable in 60 FPS (all GFX based on Daniel BUEHLER work).
- New level 8 music by Nils FESKE.
- New title screen (GFX based on Daniel BUEHLER work).
- New menu screen with highscores table.
- The game can now be paused with "P".
- Levels 1 to 7 playable in 40 FPS instead of 20 FPS.
- The energy bar becomes a damage bar like in Wings of Death.
- Original extro included (Thanks to Gerald MÜLLER-BRUHNKE).
- "Lives sprite display bug" fixed.
- When you lose a life you keep your weapon (at last!).
- "Thunder Blades" weapon given up and replaced by the original "Thunder Balls" weapon.
- Level 6 boss head bobbing out and neck improved.
- Now sprites flash when hit.
- joystick support added (known bug on menu screen, use space bar to go to stage select screen).

If no important bug is found, it should be the last release of Blazing Wings so enjoy the game and thanks for all your support !

I loved the original Thalion releases, and it's kind of a shame they were completely forgotten by time: ) Essentially - this looks less like a remake, and more like an enhanced port.
Unfortunately, I am having no luck with the download - Megauploads is being uncooperative, and doesn't display the 4-letter code I'm supposed to enter.
Also - why so huge? Don't you have mods you could include as the music?

Now I want to port Ghost Battle to the GM, but I'm afraid I'll have to mess with its graphics, as even though they seemed pretty back in 1990, they seem rather ugly now.

Hi,

The musics proposed in Blazing Wings are remixes composed by Nils Schneider.

And I don't think it is possible to use the original mods cause they are "exotic".

Good luck with your port. :)
