Is it possible to create something that reacts to sounds in a set way, like the effects you can see when playing music in media players? I started to think that if it was possible, you could combine it with a microphone and create a very special platformer.

Does anyone know if it can be done? It should be, as it is in Windows media player.

The quick answer is no, nothing I have seen in gamemaker nor extending gamemaker can find the properties of imported sound. However, if you wish to press your case, I would suggest wading through the "extending gamemaker" list of dlls (and other non-gamemaker add-ons).

Keep in mind also that even if you did find such an add-on, your game would be incredibly hindered in its range of potential players, as all players would need a somewhat higher quality microphone.

I know at least one of the sound DLLs can return the volume, possibly spectrum analysis, of whatever it is currently playing. I've seen games that do this. Do a search for FMOD.

Interfacing with a microphone LIVE is not something I'm sure you can do. I believe FMOD does have microphone support of some kind. Even if it doesn't, you could conceivably record microphone audio with MCI commands in very short snippets, and immediately play them with FMOD for analysis, which might get you something close to real-time.
