Windows Vista seems to require administrative privileges to install an extension.

Shadow X, your tutorial might have a point but not everyone will be allowed to make themselves administrator (what is the point of security if you have that choice?).

When an extension package is installed, the package saves 3 files to the Extensions directory under Game Maker: a CHM, a GED and a DAT file. It is the location of this directory that is most likely the problem: Game Maker needs to make adjustments to its subdirectory in Game Maker, which is in the Program Files directory, which, under Vista, apparently isn't accesible for writing for all users.

But once installed, do you really need to be an admin to use them? I doubt it.

I'm having a problem installing an extension. I've never had a problem installing them before, but for some reason I am now.

I've done exactly as this thread suggested, but whenever I open up the extension from the "Installing Extension Packages" window (Game Maker > Select Extension Packages > Install > Installing Extension Packages, Install > Select extension > Open) the extension will not install. It wont show up in the list of installed packages or anything.
I've tried putting the file in different locations on my PC, uninstalling previous versions of the extension, and everything else I can think of. No dice.

What operating system do you use? And do you see the files of the extension actually appearing in the Extensions directory under the Game Maker directory when you install them?

I'm using Windows XP Home Edition.

And no, the files aren't appearing in the "extensions" folder under the Game_Maker7 folder. There's a DAT, LIB and GEX of every other extension I have, though.
But this one... Nothing happens. When I select it in the install window through GM, it acts like I didn't select anything at all.

Actually... scratch that. It looks like it's something wrong with the extension itself. I just noticed it, but when I "install" the latest version of the extension, it puts a single GEX file from a previous version into the "extensions" folder. But the file has no data in it at all and is 0 KB.
Heh, I just realized that. I'll have to shoot a message over to the creator.

Thanks. If you wouldn't have pointed that out I probably wouldn't have noticed it. Heh. <_<

I have the EXACT same problem. I also get this when I start Game Maker:

And better yet - I JUST found the solution to that problem AND the extension package installation problem! Check out my tutorial! Click the link in my signature and there's your solution!

After changing GM7 to run as administrator, the error in the beginning "Failed to set data for" is solved.

But, the error related to extensions..."An error occured installing the extension packages" is still not solved.

If reinstall is a solution...how do I do it without losing my license for Pro.

I have a question though

most of the time when i install a new extention file it will come up with an error accoured installing the extention package. :P

can i fix this?
if so how?
could it be because i have windows vista? :D

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I'm having the same problem, and yes I have Windows Vista Ultimate.

I've reinstalled Gamemaker 3 times already. What can I do?

Yes I knew that granting administrative privilages would fix the loading error dialouge but I didn't even think of this for the extension problem which I was also having pretty stupid but makes sense lol. Thanks.

to fix the extention problum you need to right click on the game_maker 7 folder in your directory, from there go to proporties then i think it is security...

you should see the admin and a few other users, go thro the admin and all the rest and click allow for all the boxes, it gives everyone permission to make edits inside the file folder which is what GM is doing when it installs an extention

There's nothing wrong with the gex extension itself. Every extension I download doesn't work. It always says the same thing:
An error occoured installing the extension package.
(Is it because I need to have admin rights?)

This is a very usefull extension. If you are making a multiplayer game and want to send several data in one message(example: the server side creation of an enemy in a random position).

Thank you very much, great code.

When I tried to install an extension, I get an error saying; an error has occurred installing this extension.
Why is it doing this? If it matters, I'm using Windows Vista.

Does this mean it didn't install right?

Yes, but not because of you.
It didn't install because it was built wrong.
You should post the same error message to the page/person you got the extension from.
