3d Platform example!

I know what you are thinking. You are thinking, that there are plenty of other platformer examples out there and that this one won't be any better then those. Well that's were you go wrong!

In this example there are springs, blocks, elevators, treadmills, tnt's, boxes, fuel boxes, a jetpack / laser, gernades, switches, rocks, skybox, water, lighting, online play, cannon(won't turn properly in mplay), basic enemies, and most importantly -terrain.

So what are you waiting for?

Controls-

ctrl: fire lazer or throw gernade
space or right click: jump or fly
arrow keys or mouse: move and turn around
enter: put on/off jetpack, or use room portal
shift: activate/deactivate lazer
printscreen: take snapshot of game
cheat buttons.... :D

P.S. Mplay may have troubles... So please only use on a network (eg- School network, home network, library network, work site network)

But, what do you think of the example? Should I add cannons, online play, ramps, rotating blocks, enemies, 3d level editor, handle for the laser?

Hmm its quite good! I wouldnt add much else because its a platform example, you add those things it turns into a game and people (n00bs) will just think 'hmm oo an editable game, if i change the graphics and sounds, people will never know i didnt make it'. :skull:

P.S. Its spelt 'Laser' with an S. Light Amplification Stimulated by Emitted Radiation. Im not a geek, honest :D

I'm going to download this. If it turns out to be my 3D Platform example which also has TNT boxes, jetpacks, springs, elevators, grenades and boxes then I wont be impressed.

From the screenshot I don't see shadows so it may be yours. I'll have to see.

Seriously, it's not a copy of yours. I made this from scratch, and I only looked at your example to see how you made can slide with the walls (but gm's 2d collission system messed it up for me, so I used my own collissions in the end anyways). And where does the jetpack come in on your example?

I'll try to use another host.... I can't believe that this download thing is becoming such a big problem!

Cool example, add an aim system for the lasergun and a power-based trowing system for grenades (like in Worms)

P.S.: add some sort of acceleration and friction to the jetpack: you can stop a 20 meters fall instantanely (not realistic :( )

The cannon was kinda nice and the terrain was sexy but everything was bogstandard.

I even noticed that the jumping sound is the same sound for my 3D jumping sound. And the springs look-a-like. And the grenades look similar.

Sorry, I'd rather stick to mine. No harsh feelings.

If you use shademap and the heightmap does the game draw two different models of the terrain?

Yep, player vs. player on the internet or on your local network. I have it working and ready, I'm just not sure if I should keep on working on it before releasing.... It's kinda sloppy, not to confusing, but confusing enough for a gml noob to go :) .

Update! Mplay is complete, and download links are ready.
Updates include-
Gravity affected jetpack zspeed
cannon
offline and online mplay (controls vary)
simple enemies
harmless/uncomplete mr. shark
and some basic code updates as well

Put the controls for the second player in the first page, what about adws :( ?

And...to switch pages press n :P

Anyway, the jetpack is fantastic, just like the Worms 4 one :( !

Adws was used for player 1, player two used the mouse.;

For player one- shift, f, q ;

For player two- -, + ;

Edit: pretty good... I LOVED the jet pack. that was cool. i dont like platfrom engines were the main character is a ball. he seems to be a favorite among 3D gamers... cant see y tho

I'm not working on modifying mplay because I don't think that there is much that I could do to make it better. And 2 players, seems to be enough.

If any of you have suggestions, feel free to say so.

Updates that are in progress- Targets, laser gun movement, block collissions.

Download the file again (newest version) and then go to the last two rooms. An easy way to skip rooms is by pressing n.

I tried to use 2d sprites instead of the ellipse on player object, but the sprite got messed up...

Reminder- Collissions will be altered. You will have to modify the collission codes to fit the new height of the player.

hey i just found this, this is amazing why did it get so little response??
IT covers so much stuff, and it's smooth and fast.
The controls are a bit all over the place and you should definately change the zoom in/out from mouse wheel (cause lots dont have one). Also you haven't really indicated what all the controls are really, and you should have the controls in the "show information" box ... plus make it so the "show information" comes up when you press F1 or something.

However this is amazing and i'm shocked it hasn't had more response from the community, maybe you should write a tutorial for it, and neaten the code up a little. It's a shame for this to go to waste, you shouldn't give up on it.

Edit: Whats the best method to join anothr I.P. Adress or a local network?
Everytime I try to join by entering I.P. adress it say's 'Sessio Unavailble'
But when you join local netwrok it works.
Why does it say no session Available?

(While I tried to run from both computers join from both computers)
For the joining computer only localnetwork works (without i.p. ).
What am I doing wrong?

You need two computers to have online play. (or just run your game twice)

When you use the first computer, write down the ip address it shows you, and be the host. Type in the ip address of your own computer.

On the second computer don't be the host, and enter the ip address of the other computer.

I would have loved to make it completely online (like when you chose who you will play against from a list of people online), but I'm not a millionare.... And I don't have a super-computer server. If there isn't a server, you end up using this cheap ip system.

My house inmate isn’t here he is going to come later. (Shut) he’s room is locked to. Last time I tested the game with his computer and my computer. But I remember what you just said I also done, but it didn’t work.

Does it says “No session available” because we are both using 1 internet connection and have the same i.p.?

Or is it that I am typing the IP wrongly in? (do I type in like: 169.254.124.190 or like: 169254124190)

Yoh!!!! How do I change the character sprite to some other thing like a sonic sprite? I'm trying to make a Game im creating in a better version!!!! I have :GM6: Registered. But anyone who read this message probally knows that.

A kind reminder for all of you: This example can be used for anything you want. You can learn off of it, build off of it, borrow code from it, ect... However make sure to give credits for codes belonging to me, or to mechanicos (for the height-terrain checking script). It took me a lot of work to put this example together, and I would get seriously frustrated if someone stole from it without giving me the proper credits.

Also, I have updated the example a little. It now uses external terrain files to generate the terrain, instead of the cheap sprite-drawing system that I used before. I changed the block collissions a little, and added a bazooka. If you want to have the benefits of this newer version, just redownload the example here- Download here (make sure to unzip when done downloading)

wow that was great, the mplay worked fine except if i shot, the other player didn't see it untill a while later. and when i pressed W for the cheat, it said other player has left. i play this game for about 30 mins on single player mode and enjoyed it very much.

-i do think this belongs in the wip section.

Some people are making their games off of it, but I personally am not making a game out of this. So it cannot go in the Wip section, because the author (me) is not continuing it, and did not intend on ever making a game out of it.

Ok, I also want to forwarn all of you about something.

If you ever want to sell your game, and your game has codes by me, or your game was built off of my example (For example...); here is what you should do-

Contact me through Email or pm. Tell me exactly why you want to sell it ("I wanna get rich" won't do). Tell me the estimate price of how much you are going to sell it for. If you pass these steps:

I will tell you how you can repay me (repay !=money all the time), and after you "repay" me in some sort of way, and give me complete credits in a visible place in the game, you can sell it.

Serious consequences will arise if you don't follow these guidelines.

Does anybody want a code to make realistic sun-light shadows? -- Because I have the code laying around in the source of my 3d terrain editor, and if anybody wants it I can give it away....

I would be very interested to see your method for shadowing system as I am currently in development of ray-traced shadow system using vectors.

But sure I would like to see your method.
