"Test your skills against the core in the ultimate battle of agility and dexterity."

Soul Fighter is a top-down scrolling shooter reminiscent of abstract japanese shooters (specifically the work of ABA Games). Two modes of play, normal and endurance, see you battling against "the core" - a sentient being of unimaginable power. You must gather all the courage, agility and dexterity you possess if you want to survive.

In May, 2005 Soul Fighter won the GMG Two Room competition. Entries were required to only use two (2) rooms throughout the game.

Thanks.

HEY! If I do medium, it won't ask me anymore if I want to submit the highscore online!

EDIT : If your own highscore tables are full, it won't ask to submit the highscore online anymore! Even if you have the highest score ever!

Thanks for the comments guys.

HEY! If I do medium, it won't ask me anymore if I want to submit the highscore online!

I implemented a "feature" where if your score is lower than the lowest score on your local highscore list, it doesn't bother to allow you to submit it online. This was sort of to prevent people from submitting every score they achieve... but I suppose it doesn't really help and would just cause problems in the long run.

I'll upload a version with this removed now...

EDIT: Uploaded... Re-download if you wish.

I have to say it's a great game :GM009:
And it's almost as hard as my scrolling shooters usually are.

Also, I finally made 1st place on hard mode ;) so now I'm gonna try to get 1st place on extreme. :P

Although one of my scores never made it to the online highscore (I think it was because my offline highscore was already full). I think you should fix this.

EDIT: Oh well, 2st on Hard and 2nd on Extreme, that's good enough I guess :GM061:
YAY! Now I'm 1st on easy too :)

Cool game. Music were a bit boring after a while. Also, I think the ships hitbox is a little to big, but I'm used to those in japanese shooters :รพ. And the names of the attacks are hard to see because of all the bullets you have out at that time. No big deal unless the next pattern is Snipe I guess, but that particular one suprises me every damn time and kills me :/.

Oh, and scoring is really slow :). Took FOREVER to make 1st place on Easy.

Otherwise it's a cool game.

Nice game.
Some attacks are very innovative.
Why didnt you release it here earlier?

Your game is well done but i would really change some things.
The players lasers shouldnt cover the enemy bullets.
And this kind of game needs gamepad control !!
And i would prefer a slow-button over the speed-button and fast speed as default..

I've been on holidays for a while and I wanted to polish it up a bit before releasing it here.

...extemely difficult on easy maode...

Balancing the difficulty has been... difficult :) I've had complaints about Easy mode being far too "easy" - which is evident in the online highscores. Perhaps you're just not used to this style of game?

The players lasers shouldnt cover the enemy bullets.

Fair suggestion. Although, you shouldn't be shooting unless the core has stopped.

And this kind of game needs gamepad control !!

I'll look into it. As I don't have a gamepad, I might need someone to test it for me.

And i would prefer a slow-button over the speed-button and fast speed as default..

Hm... this would make the harder modes a bit annoying - you'd have to hold the slow button almost constantly (due to the number of bullets and tight gaps). The speed button was mainly added to make "wall" actually possible.

Thanks guys, glad you like the game.

Wow, this game is nice, great, fantastic! The graphics were awesome, gameplay too! But shouldn't you add lives? (I'm a bit unsure, nobody has asked it so far :)). Edit: Nevermind, lives would suck. :skull: There will be no challenge anymore.

This really deserves a 10/10!

I plug my gamepad and go play it more! (I use joytokey, but if you need someone to test gamepad I can do it)

I remember in another version I must have gotten at the GMC in which you had motion blur in the game. Now I don't see it; am I blind or has it been removed? It was a nice feature. Along with the blue explosion and exposed purple core compared to these gray tones.
Anyway, a really nice game, it does indeed remind me of those manic japanese shooters, like the ones from Kenta Cho's ABA Games. Good job.

I liked it. The graphics and presentation do remind me a lot of ABA Games, though perhaps it doesn't ooze quite as much style as Cho's games. =)

I thought the hitbox was a bit large and I missed joystick control, but its still a very polished game.

Posted Image :skull: OMG!!! Is it even POSSIBLE to dodge all of those tiny little circles? It seems impossible to me, since all of them are spinning all over the place, traveling at 150 miles/kilometers per hour, and lasts for about 15 seconds... ;)

On to thy ye old review! :medieval:

Gameplay: Pretty simple, yet very fun. Most of the attacks were very creative, great job! 9/10 I have a two attacks myself :o

Fireworks: Two green circles fly out of the core to the left and right of it, then explode into hundreds of orange circles like a fireworks affect. You have to dodge all of them when they fall.

Lava Spout: The core creates a purple laser thing on the bottom of the room. The laser then shoots up orange circles that fly into the air and back down.

Graphics: Very simple, but blended together nicely. I think your ship and the core could of have a little more detail, though. 7/10

Sound: Also very good, but could have been better. The music was great, and the sounds too. I think you should have added a boom or something for when the core attacks. 8/10

Controls: Very easy to use and remember. 10/10

Difficulty: Very challenging (probably too challenging). I would say some modes are close to imposible, refering to my screenshot above. There should have been a super-easy mode, where the circles move extra slow  6/10

Overall: 8/10 (not an average)

Please add an option to remove the effects on your ship's bullets. I'd like it better if your bullets were just simple circles that didn't obscure the core's bullets or bullet pattern names.

Other than that, it's a great game. It reminds me of sdmkun.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I agree, the ship's bullets causedd me to die countless times (mostly on confetti, burst, and escalator--those purple lasers shot me). I know you're only supposed to shoot when the core stops attacking, but sometimes I let off the crtl button a second late and get shot.

It is way too easy for an easy option, but I assume you haven't played many manic vertical shmups. As for the wind dance, I simply moved into one of the "lanes" and moved back and forth, left to right.

I found spincycle to be very easy on easy, medium and hard, on extreme its a bit tough.
Hose is even easier to dodge, even at extreme.
Snipe, now that was the easiest out of all, it has almost never hit me (except the first few times when it surprised me).

In my opinion, burst on extreme is one of the hardest to dodge, and beam... thats the one that hits me the most, on extreme its very hard to dodge.

This is just my opinion though, but some of them has patterns (like spincycle, hose, snipe) and some don't (burst, confetti, beam). The ones with patterns gets easier to dodge as you get used to them, while the random ones tend to be a bit harder. (not confetti though) :medieval:

Please add an option to remove the effects on your ship's bullets. I'd like it better if your bullets were just simple circles that didn't obscure the core's bullets or bullet pattern names.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I've always thought the other way around. I keep the speed button held down. If the enemy bullets were not covered up by my firepower and it's effects, I could set both to a single button, hold it down, and make the game MUCH easier. For me, part of the challenge is timing between when to start firing and when to stop.

I have really enjoyed this game and feel you did an excellent job in creating it. The Endurance style takes me back to some games that I used to play on ATARI, not because they were similar, but because you could play and play and play until your fingers were sore and you still can't "win". The goal isn't to get to the end; it's to compete against yourself. I always liked that in a game (and unlike the original ATARI games, you can actually pause this game if you need a break in the middle!)

Easily customizable, interesting music, sound effects, and graphic effects that all fit very well together and are not overpowering (I never get the feeling that I am sick of listening to the music... but even if I was at least it can be turned off).

One bug I found concerns the in-game highscore table. In Endurance, once you die you can type in your name. If your score is lower than the lowest current highscore for that level, the score in the last slot will be replaced by it. So if I have all 10 slots filled with score ranging from 30,000 to 100,000 and then score only 5,000 and type in my name, the bottom 30,000 score will become 5,000.

If I was to change anything, I would have preferred the word indicating the next pattern to be in another color and on top of my firepower on in another location. I would have added more to the "Normal" game. I only played it a few times, but because it ends and there is no reward, it feels more like a training mission than a normal version of play. But, that's just my opinion :D

Ok, enough rambling..... *going back to play some more*

Gfx: 10/10- You or whoever made the gfx nailed it!
Sound: 10/10- Well it's just great!
Control: 9.9/10- You should use the space button.
Gameplay: 8/10- The easy difficulty is suppose to be easy if you ask me.
Overall: 9.47- Pretty high, ain't it huh!?

I agree with you for the most-part, but the space button isn't that good imo, I like Z/X better.
(People who are new to GM tend to use 'space','ctrl' etc... while experienced users switch to 'z','x' or similar.)
For the difficulty on easy mode, it's already too easy (if you look at the easy highscore you'll see what I mean)
I could have kept going for much longer, but I played for around 20 minutes without dying, I got hit on purpose because it got a bit boring.

I think that bryan (easy: 999,999) has cheated (not sure tho), it's pretty hard to get exactly 999,999 points...
I also think that the 2 best scores on extreme are a bit too good... :(

The default controls don't matter that much because you can customize them to what you want in the game. However, Shift and Control were possibly choosen because the keys are bigger, they are close together, and because, unlike almost any other keys (ALT being the other), they are intended to be held down while other keys are pressed. Holding down multiple keys for an extended amount of time can cause the game to drag.
