Evolites
A simple evolution simulator - Tools, predators, download, and more!

Posted Image
Posted Image

Introduction & Features
Welcome to Evolites, a simple life simulation where you indirectly control the fates of a countless number of tiny, unique creatures, known as Evolites. As the Evolites evolve naturally, various tools are at your disposal to save, destroy, create, and interact with them. You may let things run their course, or you may directly intervene, and make sure that only your chosen strain of Evolites survives!

Partially inspired by the opening sequence of the upcoming game Spore, and partially a pet project that just seemed fun to make, Evolites was created to interest, entertain, and relax all types of gamers, casual and up. The game features a mouse-only control setup, and large, colorful graphics. Online functionality via the Reflect Account System is also built-in, and a handful of options put you at full control of how you want to play the game.

Controls
Controlling the game is simple, especially if you have a wheel mouse. If you do not use a wheel mouse, the up and down arrows may be substituted at the necessary times. Hover your mouse over the bottom portion of the screen to bring up the toolbar in the main play area.

LEFT MOUSE - Click to open menu boxes, press buttons, select Evolites, and activate selected tools. Click and drag Evolites from the catalog to copy them, save them, or upload them
RIGHT MOUSE - Click to deselect Evolites or delete Evolites from the catalog
MOUSE WHEEL / UP & DOWN ARROW KEYS - Interact with variable buttons or attract the selected Evolite to the current mouse location
F1 - Restart the game (all unsaved data will be lost)
F4 - Toggle between windowed and fullscreen modes

Online Features
This game is compatible with the Reflect Account System! Using a Reflect Account, you can access online features in all games that use the system, via one login.

Evolites was the first game released to use this system, and registering will allow you to upload your own Evolites to the internet, as well as report to other users browsing the site that you are playing, and have your game automatically download Evolite information from the online catalog for predators! You can find out more by visiting Reflect Account!

Very good. I submitted creatures. Polygon creatures would've been awesome though. Each creature on the website would be different.

Yeah, I would have liked to add polygonal creatures, but judging from some of the other games I've seen that use it, it just seemed to make the game run too slow to be practical for this game... Especially when this game currently rides the cusp of slowing down every now and then!

Glad you like the game guys, I've found it's really an interesting experience to just leave it on while you work on things and come back to it now and then to see how things have progressed. Seeing which families survive, and helping them along is a good break from action now and then! :P

Hey fred! This came out great, and im glad you finally finished it! I liked all the effects, the music was great, and it seemed to meet your goal of relaxing people. :P I also liked how evolites tended to "glow" after the are radiated. Anyways, good job! cant wait to see more projects from you.

Well now I'm happy :)

I registered an Reflect account and the account system works good. The registeration is easy and it takes no time to make an account. Really nicely made and the catalog works fine too. The water effects are relaxing and the music is also.. It makes me just fall to my bed and relax for a while. It's like one of those TV's sudoku mobile games or something.. I really like the menus and the smooth motion of them, reminds me of The Sims 2. The tools are wonderful and they are different from another to another. The Evolite submitting system works wonderfully, Kamone, Generation 2, Predator rating: 20

and I really like that you can download other players evolites.

I first thought that this was just another copy of the evolutiongames but you proved me wrong, this is really it's own game. The Reflect Account system is the best and I think the only net registeration system in GM history and even better than most of the boughtable games. I will keep Evolites on my comp. for a long time, that's for sure :)

I really like your style of design, HT3D and your little abandoned projects too. Continue working with games, I'm sure that someday you will be working on Ubisoft or something :P I'm looking forward to your next games or projects. Gunner McJack: P.A.K sounds cool. Any preview pictures or sneek peeks ? ;) See ya!

Hey by the way, Who are in the Reflect Games and are you in a need of more members ?
I would be interested if so. But if you don't want to that's alright :D

EDIT: Oh, I read the Reflect Games site FAQ and there the answer was, oh well :)

This is an absolutely amazing game. The simplicity of the graphics makes it a very appealing and user-friendly game. The music is great, but a playlist with a couple other tunes would have been nice. There was a lot of user interaction in this game, which made it one of the better evolution simulators. I'll be keeping this for a while.

I have a question though: When the evolites evolve, do they only grow bigger or do they change in shape as well? Hmm, maybe you'll just say to play it and find out. :)

I forgot to mention, if you convert your music to Ogg format, and drop it into the game's music folder, it will automatically load it at startup, and cycle through each track. Careful though, each Ogg file will add a few seconds to the load time, and could potentially make the game use up a pretty decent amount of memory, holding all of the songs!

And PSM, the Evolites do not change in shape, only size. I wanted to add shape, and Xot sent me some really great stuff on Biomorphs, but using so many primitives really seemed like it would make the game a bit too slow, so I opted to just keep them as ellipses.

I should also mention that all evolites that are added to the online catalog can be a potentially downloaded by the game as predators, so if you've got a very fast, evolved Evolite that isn't too small, upload it... it just might wreak havoc in someone else's game!

I think I'll keep the music as it is. Good idea with not using primitives, Fred, because the game runs at a perfect speed on my not-so-perfect computer. Evolites wreaking havoc? Sounds fun B)

I like the concept alot though. I'm going to try leaving it on for a while with food fairly scarce and see what happens.

you should make something on the site where you can order the catalog by different things, so if you want to get a strong predator, you can order them by predator level. Or order them by user submitted.

oh, one other thing I've been meaning to mention since the second demo. The menu sometimes gets in the way when I'm trying to save the life of my precious evolites. Sometimes one'll go to sleep at the bottom of the screen, but when I try to save it, the menu'll pop up and I can't get at it. Maybe hold a key to be able to keep the menu hidden. That way I can get to the bottom of the screen if I need to.

Also, I'd like to be able to check the predator level of my evo's without having to upload them to the database. Oh, and some way to turn an evo into a predator and have it "thin out the herd"

The music kind of reminds me of the music on Electroplankton on DS. You should probably make the sprites different the just dots, it would make the game more interesting and eye appealing. Also you should consider making boundries, because that is annoying not being able to see some of the little guys running around.

Very nice game, the evolites I downloaded completely killed all of my own ones, they were level 30 and mine were level 3-6. Now ive sent in about a hundred level 5's to sort em out, I'll check on them in a few minutes.

Edit: All of the level 5's got completely raped by the level 30's, who are now level 40.

Nicely done game, although I think there are much better games out there. The effects were nice and all, but my favorite thing was to make about.. oh... 100-150 evolites and reduce the food to 1. Now that's entertainment. Watching them chase around that one food...

Yeah, they are fun to play with... I also like coralling a large amount of Evolites around, and away from predators and things. Don't forget about those underwater mines too, for a little extra fun.

I created an evolite named '1' but I forget how... It is a tiny black dot, and it only moves after evolving, and very slowly then. It hardly uses up any energy, and can go a whole evolution without eating. They are baout generation 26 now. I also cared for (lol) the 'Gethus' evolite (from the online catalog) until its generation 65, and I got it at 30.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Yeah, I considered the menu getting in the way when I first implemented it, but very rarely will you get an Evolite that stays only on that horizontal band for any lengthy amount of time, so normally it shouldn't be a problem. If you find that your favorite Evolites are dying before you can add them to your catalog, just stat adding them sooner... the catalog can get as big as the game will handle it.

the predator rating was kind of a last minute addition to the online catalog, but I could definitely build it into the game with an update. There are a few small glitches / repairs that I am aware of that will be attended to, but I don't want to release a new verion of the game until everything has beentaken care of, so people don't have to keep downloading new versions.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I hope you're being sarcastic... looks fine to me! Besides, I pay for my web host, so it better have at least decent download speeds!

The music kind of reminds me of the music on Electroplankton on DS.  You should probably make the sprites different the just dots, it would make the game more interesting and eye appealing.  Also you should consider making boundries, because that is annoying not being able to see some of the little guys running around.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

The music, by Kasper, was an excellent addition to the game, and really gives it a life it wouldn't have had without. Eventually I will add some more music Kasper made for the game available on the website as a seperate download... and don't forget you can add any other music you've got in Ogg format as well!

The creatures were originally plenned to be made using primitives, and Xot sent me some really gret info on some work people had done like this. The problem is, the game already rides the cusp of being too slow sometimes, and the primitives might have pushed it over the edge into sub-60 FPS speeds... something that I felt would ruin the smoothness of the game.

If you watch the way the Evolites move around a bit, you'll notice that they do in fact, loop around to the other side of the screen when they go off an edge. So don't worry about losing Evolites off the screen!

I haven't had time to get much into the game itself, but let me just say that this is some of the most beautiful interface and graphical work I've ever seen.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Thank you for the compliment! I have always felt that a strong interface and cohesive style are make-or-break factoes for games, and I put a lot of work into them, so I am glad people notice!

I think some of the most influential interfaces for my work have been in EA Sports games. Even though they aren't always the most useful or understandable (downfalls I avoid at all costs), I love the movement and dedication to style they exhibit... They really do get you in the game before you even start playing.

well i like it alot i just feel like i'm missing something because i see no point in creating dots and saving them to my computer

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

You're not alone, there are many people who don't like or enjoy this kind of game. Some people don't understand the point of games like The Sims, or Animal Crossing, but if you get enjoyment out of it, by all means, do! If you don't, thanks at least for trying! I invite everyone to try out my work, but I understand that I can't please everyone!

"1" had proliferated quite a bit on the catalog, but I've had to code some controls into it to forbid anyone from uploading it, because it was a glitch that originated somewhere I am not yet aware. i am looking into it, however, and if I find the cause of the problem I will have an updte out to fix it promptly.

This is just amazing. But I dont get what radiation does.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Thanks! Radiation affects how diverse an Evolite's children are... an Evolite with a small amount of radiation / mutation will have children that are different from it, but not by very much. An Evolite with 100% radiation / mutation will have children who are potentially much more different than it.

I just wanted to say, you've done a really impressive job branding the game on your site, and creating a good integrated brand platform.  Very, very professional.

You've also brought something back that GM has been missing: industry-level GUI.  Congratulations on raising the bar for all of us!

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Thanks, as I explained above, I value a strong GUI just as strongly as any other element of the game, and it's my goal to create simple and intuitive ways for the user to make their game work the way they want it to. I also think the Reflect Games site is a good foundation for a series of games that utilize the power of the internet, and I hope that myself and the other members of Reflect Games will continue this.

this was really fun, but I can't save any of my little creatures :). also really good gui :)

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Just add your Evolites to your catalog and they're good to go the next time you play! Please let me know if there is some error in the game that is preventing you from using it...

Whew! That was a lot of typing! Thanks for downloading and trying the game out so far everyone! I nearly went over my bandwidth limit from all the activity, but I am really having a good time with this, and we've got a lot of people talking about Evolites over at the official forum. There are even two people playing the game right now, as I type this!

Stay tuned for more news about this and other games that use the account system, and if you haven't tried out this game already, give it a shot!

If I do make a sequel, I will consider it!

In the meantime, the Online Catalog has been updated to be a bit more useful / accessable. You can find it by Clicking here. Enjoy! :)

Great set-up for the most part, but what about phsical mustations? They just swam around. It would be cool if they actually mutated.

i really like this game, im not sure about this but do the evos change at al from generation to generation like they get faster or lose engery slower, or if the different species have anything different about them, if they dont then it would be cool to add that in, also if you got to choose which type of evo you put instead of random that would be cool also
great work, keep it up

Freakin' awesome, the sun coming through above is very well made, as well as the blending effects you used. The music is great too, main menu etc. all great great great! But hrm, isn't it better to make the Evolites little creatures (such like amoebes or someting) instead of circles?

9/10!

Richard
