Hi guys, it's been a looong time since my last visit here.

I had a project that I started with game maker nearly 3 years ago. I've worked on it for almost a year and it evolved quite a lot from it's original idea. It actually evolved into 2 different games.

But it's been 2 years since I last worked on it. It's a dead project now and I don't plan on finishing it. Partly cause I have so little time to spare and so many interesting things to do, partly cause I got bored with it.

Nonetheless I think there are things in it that you might wanna check out. You can do whatever you want with it and use it as you please with one exception - the images and sprites. Since I've created all of them I've given exclusive rights for their use to Tarik and he is using them in his project Faction Wars. So please don't be a thief :medieval: There are still plenty other things in my games that you can use as you please.

Some of the things(features?) you'll find and probably use in some way:
-Pseudo dynamic lights - my method of faking dynamic lightning on 2d sprites
-Menus with buy/select/sell functions (look at the screenshots)
-Equippable items
-Smooth zooming in/out
-Pralactic backgrounds
-Enemy AI
-And perhaps many more

Battle Quadrant 4X

This is the last thing I worked on - a space 4X game . There are quite a few good ideas in it. I hope you enjoy and use them. (Since I most probably won't :medieval: )

Controls:

Mouse - Turns the ship toward the mouse pointer
Left mouse button - Fires Primary Weapon
Right mouse button - Thrust. Accelerates the ship towards the direction he is facing.
Mouse Whell up/down - Zoom in/out (Oh, you gotta check this out)

Other Controls:
Backspace - Spawn random enemy at mouse pointer
Enter - Self Destruct
Space - Camera shake
Esc - Quit
F4 - Stretch to fulscreen
F10 - Pause

Blah... :medieval: For some reason I can't show the other shots with BB IMG code, so I'll just link URLs... Here:

Enjoy.

Edit: I've edited this post since I noticed that most of you download the original game, not the 4X game. So I changed their places. The original game isn't built well and it's here just as a curio. :medieval:

Well, this is something what actually looks like something.
I'll take a look at it as soon as it loads. Or perhaps after I've been done with shoppings.

Well, nice graphics, good game playing, pretty many details including the gravity of the planet. Special effects are greatest what I have seen in a while.

Over all it's good but kinda boring with just 2 players mode in it.

OMG your Graphics are awsome, did you make them yourself ? What program did you use to create them? The gameplay and concept is solid but rather boring. Make a good singleplayer :P

Good Job keep it on

Thank you all for your time, for checking out my game and for your posts and opinions. ;)

First I would like to say that the game is boring, but only if you play it alone. ;) Have you tried to actually play it with somebody?

The gameplay and concept is solid but rather boring.

Well somebody said: "It is better to be good than original" (can't remember who)

OMG your Graphics are awsome, did you make them yourself ? What program did you use to create them?

Yes all sprites and graphics are made by me, alone. :( I use Maya, 3D Studio MAX and Photoshop (at least that's what I use most). I'm a professional 3D artist (for 6 long years now) , making my first steps into game design. ;) If there are enough interested people I could write a few quick tutorials for sprites, and effects, and how to use them effectively in Game Maker. If so PM me.

Finally many thanks goes to TheRealMethuselah for his tutorial on external resources:
http://www.barrashom...mapTutorial.zip

Also to Mechman and OmicronGamer for helping me out with sprite-based transparency and additive blending.

BTW there is a big tearing problem with my game. If anybody can tell me how can I fix it I will be most grateful.

that was amazing dude!!!! ;) . The graphics are the best i have seen on this site in a long time. I can't wait for a new update...however i have some suggestions:

1 player mode with selectible dificulty for the ai
power ups
money system to buy power ups(in single play)
maybe missions for single play ;) (like destroy 10 asteroids)

With graphics like these, you need some enemies.

Seriously - these graphics look like they were ripped from X3. I don't think you could add anything much to these.
The sounds are also very good.

However, there are some things that you could improve; namely, the resizing view is quite confusing, and (as someone else mentioned) there are no computer-controlled enemies.

Guys, thank you all!!
I probably won't be here for a while, and I won't be able to make updatets to BQ.

Today I got hired by a major game developing company, so I probably will be swamped with work. (at least for a few weeks)

I'm releasing the .gm6 file so you can modify and use something if you like it. It includes simple physics script and a few more interesting things.

This game has some of the best graphics I've ever seen. Not only are the graphics plain-out amazing, but they are consistent, and the effects which are concomitant to them are just put me in a state of ostensible jocose.

Nice!

The graphics i have to admit are spectacular!

I really like how you gave the planet a gravitational pull. It really adds a bit of a tactical advantage to the player, because you can slingshot yourself around it, and get in behind the enemy. Really cool!

hmm ofcourse i'm kinda suspicous... about the graphix
(I always am) so ofcourse I'll think they're ripped from some game cause the explosion doesn't change any bit or other graphix so here all sprites.......
but ya know...... I believe xD
nice game but really boring.. even with 2 playa's it doesn't make alota fun.. and not really original but that can be helped :(
not that it matters cause there ain't not alot orginal anymore here cause so many stuf here O_o
but really nice 7/10

Thank you everybody!!

There are a few things I would like to say. Some people say the game is not very original, well it really isn't, but show me another similar GM created game! :(
Also, yes it is not original, because it's a Star Control clone, after all. But I don't bet on originality, I bet on quality. (which is harder to achieve)

And of course you won't like the game play, if you've never played Star Control. Or if get beaten the first time you play.

About the graphics...
Well as I've already said, I'm a pro 3D for 6 years now, so I won't ask anybody to believe me. All I ask you, is to forget everything and just enjoy the game. ;)

Also you can download the .gm6 and learn something, or get a ready solution for some problems with your games. Like tracking two objects with a view, adaptive zoom based on distance between two objects, homing missile algorithm (which is really simplified), fixed GUI in zooming view, parallactic background, simple (but quite accurate) Newton physics, and who know what else... :D

Greetings, Ur-Quan!

Hey, just lettin' you know that if you only download the gm6 file, it's missing an external file. the game keeps trying to draw a non-existant sprite.

congrats, though, otherrwise.

Awesome work on the graphics. However, sadly a multiplayer game played on a single keyboard is ususally a stop-sign for most gamers so to speak.

I was hoping you could go for a second game where there'd be much more to do (missions, storyline, ship upgrading, making money and earning a rep etc) or ask you for the FactionWars team but sadly I read the message about you being hired (which is a great thing of course, congrats!)

I was pretty impressed at how you handled the problem with always having both ships in-view and having them as close up as possible. It looked really sweet, but to be honoust it kinda got annoying when the other ship would wrap to the other side and the zoom instantly changed. Maybe making a zoomlock-option where the game would be zoomed out so much that the entire room would be visible and that it wouldn't zoom in.

There are quite a few things that I'd love to see added. Like an online highscore system, 2-player online gaming (or even 2+ player deathmatches, or other modes like capture the flag in a larger room), more weapons and many other things but I won't go into that seeing as you probably won't have time to code it all!

For all the people that are having trouble with the .Gm6 file:
He releases the gamemaker editable file, however he programmed the game so that it loads most resources (graphics, sound, music) from from the folders that come with the game. He didn't include these folders with the .Gm6, but he did include them with the executable.

So you'll have to download both the actuall game file and the editable file. Then you remove the executable (not the folders containing all of the resources), and put the editable file in their to take its place.

Anyway, awesome work! It really shows GM's potential and it looks sweet! I'd be really interested in seeing your future work, give us a shout (trough PM if it's not allowed to post about it.) when you got anything cool to show us! Good luck with the new company dude.

Hi again, I have a few spare minutes, so I decided to drop by and see what's going on. ^_^

Tarik thank you very, very much for explaining stuff for me. You are really saving me quite time and writing.

Everybody please read Tarik's post before asking questions and downloading the .gm6!

Thanks to all the rest who bothered writing opinions and suggestions, you are very kind and stimulating.

Also please read the readme file, for instructions on how to play and setup the game.
i.e.
If you edit the .ini you could remove music and sound, making the game less demanding. Also you can change planet's gravity, ship's masses, and there is also a wrap option, making the zoom less confusing.

Almost all suggestions are very good, but this is my first game and it's rather tutorial for me, than the final game which I'd like to make.

Here's what I plan to do and add to the game in this version before I consider it final:
- 3 more ships, with different weapons and characteristics
- 3 or 4 different battle zones
- some nice interface and intro screen
- 5 to 6 different power-ups (like laser sight, speed boost, armor, limitless energy)
- I would have to think about the camera and wrapping and maybe rework them
Sorry but I don't plan to make singleplayer mode in this version.

Of course in the moment I've done this I'll begin work on version 2.0 :P I plan for it to include features like:
- Single and multi player deathmatch vs computer (AI)
- A lot of ships to choose from
- Money system and customizable ships
- Single player Exploration mode with trade and quest elements (missions)
- Net play
And many more

Once again thank you all for your opinions and suggestions, you are very stimulating! Please continue with your feedback, it is very helpful and important to me.

-Greetings, Ur-Quan

Whoa! It's been a while!! :D

I haven't enough time to spare with my project, so this update is really late! :medieval:
Here is a new screenshot:
Posted Image

And here is the update:Download!

Hope you like it.

What's new:
A few bugs fixed, a few more added. :( The game now is quite playable. There are 2 ships that each player can choose from. New animations in the main menu added. To choose ship use Up,Down,W,S keys. To select it G,Ctrl keys. The game is quite greedy for RAM(only in the main menu), but other than that it runs smoothly on average PC. You can use the .ini file to modify the Options, check out the readme.txt for more instructions.

Hope you enjoy it! :P

This game feels very professional. Although I think a one player mode vs. computer would be great for practice. The screen zoom was a great feature that allows the player to get closer to the action, although the instant zoom out at times was very annoying. Keep up the great work!
