My favorite genre is racing games, specifically mx racing. I enjoy doing tricks and stunts on mx that you can’t really do with a car. Atv racing is pretty cool too. I’m so psyched with 2XL MX Offroad, they pitted mx vs. atv... it’s an awesome concept.

Which means sci-fi exploration and simulation games, like the X-universe series and Evochron Mercenary. They always make me relax. EVE is also really great, but it requires a lot more attention and effort than I can afford at the moment, so I'm having a break <3

I like anything from a game like bioshock to platforms to point and click, all three are fun; I also like minecraft and the consept of a hard servival game inwhich you must start from scratch. 7 months before minecraft came out I hade the idea of makeing a game inwhich yo crash into a planet inhabited with crazy strong monsters and most scavage for food and resouses to make weapons. I planned to have a 7 by 7 craft grid (like minecraft somewhat) where you craft tools and weaponsthat are completely custom and extremly detailed. This was a unique idea for a videogame at the time

My favourite genres are RPG and action-adventure.

I voted RPG, although I typically only like certain sub-genres of RPG (turn-based RPG (older Final Fantasy games, Pokémon), turn-based action RPG (Paper Mario), and Kingdom Hearts (although I like this for the action-adventure aspects more that the RPG aspects))

And that's another of my favourite genres -- action-adventure. It's not a choice in the poll... some people consider it to be a sub-genre of adventure, but I consider it its own genre (especially because you got action-adventure games like Banjo-Kazooie and DK64 which can even fall under the platformer category rather than adventure category, yet they are action-adventure).

Lastly, a genre that I sometimes like (though not one of my favourites) that is not a choice in this poll is rhythm games (stuff like DDR, Guitar Hero (I don't like Guitar Hero though), and Donkey Konga).

Also I consider TCGs (like Pokémon TCG, Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG, etc.) to be a different genre than "card games". The whole concept behind them is a lot different... the cards represent monsters, in a way it's like you are playing with monsters rather than the cards themselves (making it more of the equivalent to a RPG with very little level-up capabilities). And I generally think of a "card game" as more traditional, usually using the 52-card deck (or some variation of it)

Text-based I do not consider a genre... more of a style. You can have text-based adventure games, text-based RPGs, text-based puzzle games, etc.

My favorite genre is probably real-time, click-n-drag, first-person, lovecraftian, historical survival-horror-mystery adventure games.
...Either that or sandbox, malleable-world, survival, legobox-world games. I'm surprised that there aren't options for these... oh, well.

I voted platform, because the general idea of maneuvering around and having to avoid obstacles or the like in real time I think is the most appealing part of computer games in general for me. But the puzzle genre is right up there along with it for me as well, and it peaks my interest when the two are combined somehow.

I love a well done shooter (Far Cry, comes to mind, but I've played everything from Halo, to Call of Duty, to Battlefield, to ArmA), and I love a good RPG as well.
But Real Time Strategies have to be some of the best games, hands down. Games that require thinking, skill and at times, patience and cunning. Especially games like Empire: Total War, that are a little more grounded in realism and reality.

Why are RPGs the most popular genre? I think its because of the depth that they involve. Is that it, or am I missing something?

I know it is an old post:

Generally speaking RPGs need the least skills when it comes to reaction, timing, aiming, movements*, etc, so it is more compatible with gaming for relaxing. Looting is another thing people like. Plus the depth of story and the gameworld you already mentioned.

*) Those who say COD is the most popular franchise currently and is a shooter: It doesn't need any of the aformentioned to be enjoyed.

Real Time Strategy.
They're fun, they make you think.
Plus they're online so they have alot of new stuff everyday.
Plus they mapmakers, which make the game fun.
Plus they can get really cool mods, to add dinosaurs and that stuff...
Warcraft III The Frozen Throne I reccomend to all RTS lovers, it's awesome.

I'm a huge sucker for any game with epic plots....which in my experience, have usually been RPGs, so I voted RPG somewhere along the line. I do like RTS and fighting games too, as those three genres (RPG, RTS, fighter) tend to split gameplay into specific battles, which suits me really well. Love myself a game with a fun and creative battle system, no matter if it fits into any one genre perfectly or not.

For my second favorite genre, it is definately platforms.

Still got my Super Nintendo collecting dust in the closet. Whenever you feel down, there's nothing like some good old fashioned platformer games.
