Having just deposited vote 666, I feel a little wierd...

Some games fit into more than one category. Most of my favorite games are both TBS and RPG-like (Fire Emblem, FFT, etc) for example. But I voted RPG because there are more good RPGs out there than TBS. Once you play through Fire Emblem and FFT(A) and maybe Advance Wars there's really not much left.

I don't see whypeople love FPSs so much. I find the controls to be often clunky and non-intuitive and the gameplay to barely differ between most games in the genre. I've only played a few shooters that break in any way from the "run, shoot, run, shoot" formula.

My passion is Space Simulation games; all the Wing Commander games were at the top!

WC Privateer was the one game that changed my life forever! (It is now my goal in life to try and recreate the action and open endness of that game! )

I voted for Platform, because ssbm is a platformer. Or is it a fighting game? I think it's a platfromer because in fighting games you rarely jump, and in the ssb series you jump a lot.

I like a good RPG.

I hate RPGs because they end once you finish them. RPGs like Pokemon Emerald give you more to do once you finish the game (Battle Frontier).

I will never make an RPG because the thought of people actually finishing finishing (that was not a typo) my game.

What a waste of time!

RPG all the way! Simulation came in close second! Then Other(MMORPG)! Cuz' I'm mixing them! Yeah, I'm making a pokemon non-clone. It is nothing like the pokemon games at all! Its a mix! I want to vote three times, so I can get Simulation and Other in as well!!!! However, I love RPGs. Especially when they don't end. However, they don't reach simulation point. Thats good, but its also good when you have a possibility to go online, but not always online.

i voted for role playing game coz they actually require thinking and not as much "see how long you can hold down the fire button" fighting.
i also enjoy game that do have a bit of action so I prefer games like "elder scrolls" coz they are 3d role playing action.... not turn based.

bi :)

Why are RPGs the most popular genre? I think its because of the depth that they involve. Is that it, or am I missing something?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I think its because people can get into the game more, but any game can be an RPG I guess thats also why because Mario is sort of an RPG your playing the role of Mario or LoZ you play as link. But I voted RPG too so ya :(

I believe that genre classifications, at least as they are now, are essentially meaningless - they intersect each other all over the place. The fact that Tomb Raider and Myst are in the same category is a testament to that. Also, you can have, say, a Platform-RPG, which incidentally I tend to like a lot. But do I like it because it's a platformer, or because it's an RPG, or because it's got the best qualities of both? It's hard to say, so I say Other.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

There is almost nothing to most fighting games. They are enteraining a little while but don't have much lasting appeal. However on the occasion that something is added like platformed levels and items like in Super Smash Brothers then they gain more depth and become more fun. Also they have more substance if they're in full 3D but at that point they can be a million other genres. So essentially most fighters are button mashers.

My vote was for adventure but I also enjoy platformers(2D & 3D), RTS, and flight combat.

Puzzles are awesome too but only when they're done VERY well.
Simulations like RollerCoaster Tycoon are also fun.

I always enjoy a First person shooter, as long as it has a good strong story line to back it up. However, I did enjoy the new style used in Gears of War, with the use of Cover, and your player standing at an angle to the screen.

Don't mind a decent Role-play now and then either though.

I don't see much of a point in asking our favorite game genre when most people prefer a wide variety of different genres. There should be another more specific pole on favorite game series (comercial console/PC).

RPGs All the way. Although I like action games, adventre games etc, but RPG games just have that extra touch where you get to know the characters and you care about them. One exception to this though is Metal Gear solid which is the most awesome game ever invented (IMO, I mean, I dont wanna start any arguments).

RPGs can act as almost any other genre making it a redundant option. All of you who voted RPG should post and say what kind of RPG you like.

Seriously, a game series/franchise poll would be nice. Use things like: (Mario, Halo, Metroid, Zelda, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy) as some options. Only popular stuff I guess to controll the size of the poll.

Technically, no, the single player RPG tells a certain story even if it has elemnts that the player can affect. If you wanted MMORPG you should have voted "Other" and then posted saying that your "other" was MMORPG.

Only very well done puzzles are any good. We don't need anymore tetris. If you want a copy of tetris you just walk into literally ant store that sells games. We need original, well done puzzles like Magnetica and Polarium, both for the DS.
