Mine would be Tower Defense, but I said adventure by mistake.

I'm going with RPG, in case my posting in multiple RPG topics didn't make it obvious.

Major props for mentioning Phantasy Star in the poll.

One of my favorite genres is a subgenre called 'Cinematic Platformers'.

'BLACKTHORNE' is a good example of one.

If I could +50 this guy I would. I watched my uncle play this game from beginning to end back in 1996. I've been trying to remember the name of it for about ten years now.

RPGs are my favorite though. :)

Certainly platformers (various) and RTS games. Though I prefer RTS games that are campaign-oriented (mostly old RTS like Total Annihilation or Age of Empires 2) than those which are multiplayer-oriented. Multiplayer RTS games are often mess.

I don't get why there are so few votes for Tower Defenses! They are quite entertaining, in my opinion. They are easy to understand, varied, and test you strategic skills.

I voted for FPS anyways :P

I voted for sandbox games, as the thing that I like the most in a game is the freedom that it leaves to the player. But I don't mean not having a story: that's another part that I love, a story to follow, using your path.

Really interesting that Role-Playing games are (as of me writing this) in the lead. Definitely some good game design theory regarding all these results

This is missing two big choices, Action games (beat em ups, 3rd person combat, etc) and Survival/Horror. Also RPG is a very broad term, I wouldn't really call it a genre though for gaming as it can be implemented in an infinite number of ways. It's more of a secondary element that can be applied to almost any type of game. Still I went with RPG as my choice because they have been the games I put the most time into and got the best experience from. That being said, I have experience playing all types of games and have enjoyed games across all genres. Like music, I don't discriminate based on the label or genre, if it's of good quality and interests me than I may enjoy it.

On second thought, some of my favorite games are games that strongly don't fit into an actual game genre.

I'm beginning to believe the concept of game genres restricts game creation as a whole and indirectly discouraging experimentation (with the exception of main stream games that all seem to experiment is the same direction as a counter to the idea of genre ironically becoming a genre, itself).

Two and a half years of game development taught me the joy of making something unique and unconventional. It is not good enough to make a game fun when there are way too many other freeware games that make fun their selling point.

I don't have a favorite genre, per se. I generally prefer fast-paced action games with exceptionally tight controls. Whether it's an FPS, a platformer, or a fighting game doesn't matter to me; I like them all. That doesn't mean I don't like other kinds of games, too, though. I love strategy games that are "deep yet accessible", like Hearthstone, Frozen Synapse, or Cities: Skylines, to name a few.

Oh, and I hate games with dull, tedious exposition, or which require grinding to progress. So RPGs are generally not my kind of thing.

Wow, didn't expect RPGs leading by so much.

One remark, in my opinion the RPG example is not very good: "Diablo" is more a hack'n'slay than RPG.

RPG I think more of final fantasy, skyrim, dragon age. where stories/choices are in the front and not the combat/fighting system

To be honest this chart would be more accurate if you were to make people choose 3 things

and each one give each bar 1 point....

RPGs(meaning action hack&slash like Diablo, which is not rpg though...) for me and looks like i've choosen to work on the most popular genre!

I've played a lot of strategies of both types, some FPS(Quake, CS) and not much from the rest.

For me you cannot beat a good Sandbox/Strategy/Simulation game such as Cities: Skylines, Age of Empires 2 and Mount and Blade Warband. The sense of progression going from a town to a city or militia to an empire is truly satisfying.
