Development on the Tiles tab has been completed, for now: http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/4029/15594773.png The current system provides a very easy way to customize your materials. The editor will recognise normal & specularity maps and assign them to materials. You can define diffuse and specular settings to define how your materials react to light. The Invert X and Invert Y tools will help you orient the direction of the normals with the click of a button.

How is that using 164 triangles? And are those light applied to a type of tile - or each individual tile depending on its location in the scene?

The light effect is applied to the material of the tiles itself. It's a per-pixel calculated effect, so placement can be anywhere as you see fit. It will always work.

The trianglecount is also because of the text and interface objects. They require triangles to render aswell. The trianglecount parameter is just for development purposes, so I can make sure it's not doing anything funny.
