What sort of collision checking? If it's the sort of smooth movement Mega Block Man had - I can imagine it was a pain in the ass to get momentum working correctly. The model would also have to dynamically change, making optimisation harder. Mega Block Man would also have to not be able to get stuck in awkward shapes... And those spikes would have to stick to a movable morphable terrain. So, yeh... that's a considerable achievement.
