It's obviously Microsoft pushing YoYo to host such comps so that more people start using Win8.

I think both of those are obvious (why would any company host a competition if there's nothing in it for them), but the fact remains that entrants still can receive a lot of prizes. I don't see how 'gimmick' - indicating a cheap trick? - applies here.

The cheap trick is probably that the comp is designed to trick you into using Windows 8. I'm still weighing up whether a possible $10,000 prize is worth getting Windows 8. Maybe not. :P
