First go here:
http://forums.gamemaker.nl/index.php?showtopic=280090&hl=#

To fix the Failed to set data for '' error and registration problems

Make sure you to this before registering/purchasing but ultimatelly you will need do this if you registered without applying this fix first and GM goes from pro to lite. Do not apply if you are registered and the registration sticks and you have the data error still, you may break things then.

This is by no means an approved solution. It worked for me, that's all I can vouch for. Try the softwrap solution first:

http://forums.gamemaker.nl/index.php?showt...dpost&p=1942420

Right click the gmaker7 setup and click run as administrator when installing.

Righ click the GM Icon on desktop, click properties. Click Shortcut, Click Open File Location.
It`s a quick way to get to the installation folder...

Right click Game_Maker application, click properties, Click compatibility, Check the Run this program as an administrator box...

Do the same for all other exes that may be there, At this point there is only the uninstal.

Note: In any case, make sure Game_Maker.exe has the Run as administrator flag set. I just had a problem with another program that needed the setting, Simply running it's setup as admin did not do the trick, the application installed did not have the flag set.

If you have multiple users, each user must have the admin permission.
Tried removing the run as admin once registered an tried another user (non admin) but the permission were still set to admin because I installed it in admin mode... Vista asks for an admisnistrator password when user run the program. Unfortunatelly, Vista thinks the password is invalid at that point. I did not try to reinstal normally and then set the admin flag. I don't want to loose my registration.
or
If vista asks you for permission to run the program turn UAC Off.
With your admin account, Go to control panel, User accounts, Turn User Access Control on and off... On my computer it asked the question for almost everything I clicked on. This fixes that. Not as secure as with UAC but I never needed this level of control anyway. I am the sole user and I have a good firewal and a good virus scanner.
I did and now every user can run the registered GM. If you have never had proplems with multiple users on your machine over the last 5 years, you'll know that this Vista feature is way too much (Or simply crap). I never had more than one user on my machine (me). Even my regular user (me) with admin level access (Only I am admin, no other user on my machine) was being asked to allow/disallow execution for almost everything I clicked on. UAC is crap (until everyone complies that is).

Anyway. Hopefully Yo-yo will come out with the right setup program/GM code fix to provide a more seamless solution. Probably something as simple as changing where the data is written in the registry.

This is if the games freeze when you press play. Update DirectX even if you have 10 (Vista has 10)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en
Don't forget to reboot your machine. I had trouble with my laptop not doing a hard reset. When it did, things started to run.

[/edit]

OK, I could not run GM6.1 on Vista at all so I got 7

7 Loaded games but would not run them
Hung at the Preparing sounds part of the load screen
Hung if I pressed the play button in the sound window (confirming the sound related problem)

I have directx 10 but I did install MS end user directx using the web setup
It did not upgrade anything but it did add the directx SDK. I don't know why, I did not run the developer's install. Stroke of luck, it did fix the game playing part.

I still get a
Failed to set data for ''
error right before the nag screen

And in the code window, there is a black box where the applies to: text was and a black box after the self, other, object radio buttons. Not a big deal.

Anybody knows what the error above is? I am scared to register, I am concerned the thing will hang at some other point in some registered feature. Still, only 20 bucks but still. Does anyone else use GM7 not registered and get that error above?

Any registered GM7 and vista people out there? Any problems?

Also, what the difference between purchase and upgrade? Anybody purchased online yet? Any problems?

Anyway, I'm possibly overly paranoid tonight...

Cheers!

hey.. another vista user that can't get it to work, although your problem sounds to be different from mine. My GameMaker itself works perfectly fine, yet i can't run any programs through it, nor can i run any compiled .exe's. It doesn't give me an error at all, just tells me it didn't run.

I purchased the thing too. I have no idea as to the problem, but i tried emailing support.; just haven't gotten an answer back.

I get the same error.
Also it seems that though I've activated the program through the Activate product screen, GM7 still runs in Lite mode.
Still awaiting any sort of response on this.

Here. try what I did, run the setup. You'll only get 7 megs of SDK installed in the end but it fixed my problem. It left directx 10 intact.

The installer froze on my laptop that has Vista. I'm going to wait for it to respond before I do anything else.

The purchase blows up on the second page. It thinks there is no internet connection, right after it loaded the payment method screen LOL

The ugrade screen wants me to log in or sign up. I can't log in with the information I gave it before, not can I sign up with my user name.... And it does not remember the info I entered comming back... Amateurs.

Also, when I click the upgrade, I kills my current browser window and all the stuff I typed in creating a post...

To fix the Failed to set data for '' error

Righ click icon, click properties. Click Open File Location.

Right click GM application, click properties, Click compatibility, Check the Run this program as an administrator box...

Ultimately, Right click the gmaker7 setup and run as administrator when installing.

Make sure you to this before registering/purchasing

It's probably trying to save registry information in an area it's not allowed. Or an ini in a folder reserved for the operating system.

It may have failed to save the entry because of security. Try my fix above. And see if you can register again.

It also fixed the invalid page 2 problem I had. I'll try to register tomorow.

Cool, the message no longer appears, but I can't register because it says I've already used the key.

Well, I bet when you get another key it will work. But it's just an educated guess.

But you probably don't have Vista, do you??

I get the same exact problems. Every time I load it, it comes up with [Failed to set data for ""] message, and still runs in Lite. I typed the code in correctly, but each time it says that I already successfully used that code. It was supposed to Email me with a confirmation, but it still hasn't done that.

Stupid Vista. dry.gif

(Does anyone else think it's funny, in a twisted way, that the whole point of GM7 was to get proper Vista support, and yet apparently the DRM for it didn't bother getting proper Vista support? smile.gif ANY developer paying the tiniest bit of attention to the Vista specs knew about the Limited User accounts. That was one of the big huge deals about Vista.

Yoyo needs to spank softwrap hard for providing such crappy support on their DRM.)

Getting proper vista support is complicated... So many different settings. Maybe they tried it with UAC turned off or on a machine with one user as admin level... Many DRM try to hide themselves and their settings deep within the system's information. These cheap (useless) techniques will fail under Vista.

Anyway, turning UAC off fixes a few more problems. Why would MS add another level of access is beyond me. This feature is what we call overkill and only useful if total stangers have access to you computer wich they don't unless you are running a net cafe or something.

hey there i nhave vista too, and your guide fixed my problem right away. But it create a new one too.. Now, windows says that Gamemaker is an unknown program, with means that I will have to agree that I wants to run it, each time I open it. I guess my new step should be that i told windows that gamemaker is a safe program, but I dont know how to do that. Any help?
btw.. what do you guys thinks of vista, I personally thinks that its amazely annoring that I cant run "Worm world party" and that I will have to wait to get "itunes".. but thats just my opinion.

I still can't get registered to work. I used the Vista Fix, but it just got rid of the "" error. It's probably because I had tried to register before I ran it as an Admin. I even tried to use my old computer, but it's so old, Microsoft disowned it, and GM7 isn't compatible. I guess I'll just have to wait for Yoyo Games to clean things up and hope that they can fix it. Or that Mr. Gates can fix Vista with a new service pack soon.
