Racer: Online is a WIP project I have been working on for...about 2 weeks. The original engine was made by -0NL1N3-, and it's topic can be found here =D

What is it?
Racer: Online is a multiplayer game for up to 20 people, where you can play in 3 different game modes:
-CTF (capture the flag)
-Deathmatch
-Team Deathmatch

What comes in the download?
you get:
-The Client, through which you play the game and connect to the server.
-The Server, incase you want to host a game.
-A bunch of DLLs, which are needed for the game to run.

So what are the controls?

For the client the controls are:

Main Menu
up/down: change selection
enter: do stuffs
Esc: back/quit
keyboard: this facinating device allows you to input vital information, such as your name, and the server IP <=O

In Game

left arrow: steer left
right arrow: steer right
up arrow: accelerate
down arrow: brake/reverse

Insert: change colour (in a non-team game)
Enter: send chat message

This next section are commands you type in the chat:

/help: shows help
/rename (name): change your name to (name)
/kill: destroys your own car...pretty pointless
/id: shows your ID...you probably wont need this
/serverip: shows the ip of the server, yet something else not needed
/serverport: shows the port you are connecting to the server through. Also pointless.
/showmap: toggle having the minimap, however in the "infinite" level, there is no minimap >.>
/team (1/2): either do 1 or 2. 1 = blue team, 2 = red team. This changes you to the team you specify.




The following controls are for the server:
Esc: shut down server

This next section are commands you type in the chat:
/help: shows help
/showids: shows a list of all the users and their ID. very useful for:
/kick (ID): kick a user from the game. (ID) is the id of the user to kick >=)
/map (#): tell all the clients what map to go to. (#) is a number =O. there are 11 maps. if you try a number other than 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 or 11, it will most likely screw on you.
/myip: shows your IP. useful for LAN.
/mode (#): (#) is a number. 1=CTF (capture the flag, duh), 2=Deathmatch, 3=Team Deathmatch
/randommap: goes to a random map NEW


I'm still confused, how to I use the commands?
Well, on the server, if you wanted to change to map 7, you'd type
/map 7
and then press enter.
How about if you want to kick someone. First you'd do
/showids
and a list of peoples names and id's would pop up. then you find the person who you want to kick, and put their ID after /kick:
/kick 5
then that person gets a message that they were kicked, and leaves the server =P

What about on the client side? How about if you wanted to change your name to "Bob". To do that, type:
/rename bob
then press enter. Simple.
And what if you want to change to the red team. Red team is number 2, so:
/team 2
Voila.


Who helped make the game?
Firstly, it would never have started without -0NL1N3-. Thanks to gamerman for some graphics, and for testing, as well as Shadic. Special thanks to theman for helping me out when I got stuck, and for caffine for keeping me awake.

It's hard to take a decent screenshot playing on your own :/
What it shows is the explosion from me dieing, the skidmarks (which are saved to file and loaded when you play the game again), the wall, which is what you can't drive through.

Uh, I downloaded it...now what?
First off you need to join a server. If someone else is hosting, input their IP address and select join. If no one else is hosting, then simply run the server that comes with the download, and then run the client and join 127.0.0.1

What'o I do?
Depends on the mode:

CTF:
Get the flag of the opposing team, and bring it back to your base. To score, you must also have your flag at your base.

Deathmatch:
Use your driving skills to destroy anyone and everyone, 'cept you.

Team Deathmatch:
If someone is on the opposing team, destroy them >=D

To change team, use /team (1/2), like I said above.



I got some really weird error O_o
tell me what it is so that I can fix it =D


Yeah, I've played it and stuff, what next?

The game FPS is lower than 20!

Try turning the graphics level to normal. If you use high, a good amount of Video memory. For me it runs near 60fps on all PCs I've tried, and runs constantly at 60fps when I'm only running the client and not the server as well. Also, people who've tested it have had it running at 60.

I've got an error!

ERROR in
action number 1
of Key Press Event for <Enter> Key
for object obj_server:

Error in function real().


This was in the file game_errors. I ran both the server and the client, and I saw this after i closed them, so I don't know which one did it.

Hey I downloaded this, but I couldnt play. I created my own server but once I connected, it just timed out.

I also found a bug:

When you connect to your own server and then it times out and you close the server I get an error in the actual game about menu faces or something. I cannot remember the exact error message

This was cool! But why wasn't there any1 else drving around? Capture the flag should have others, that steal the flag from you...Or did i do the wrong thing? How do i know if some one is already hsoting a server?? Good game though!

I'll look into that. It's probably because you typed in something wrong when trying to do a command.

@cleefy
It seeoms to work for everyone else. Maybe your firewall is blocking it.

@hotshotscott
If you want other people to play, then you'll need to send them the client along with the dlls, and tell them your ip. I've played this at school with 14 people connected before, and it worked fine, and was great fun =D

EDIT: Now the server give me an ERROR VALUE 201
IM STILL ONLINE AND WAITING!

EDIT: Noboy wanted to join so I closed the server...

Engine seems to be nice , but you should add outline to the tiles / objects-sprites you use cause even the car has black outlines....try making it all fitting together!

99% awesome, 1% hideous graphics. Sort out the visuals and this is 10/10 on the spot... But due to rounding down, it's only 9/10. So there :(

You're right, I'll explain =P

When I started off the project, I was originally making a racing game, but then it turned into an online car game. I decided making a multiplayer racing game would be hard, as people might join in the middle of the race, so I scrapped the idea of racing, and instead opted for stuff like in Time Crisis and other games - CTF, deathmatch e.t.c, but the name racer stuck, and as it is online, I added that on the end. Voila.

meh people wouldnt have to join mid game, called creating a lobby system :(. Im guessing that without the help of the engine you might not have gotten to the point your at? Anyways it looks good and good luck to your game.

Yeah, without -0NL1N3- I woudn't have got this far. I could do 2 player online games before, but no more. People have suggested I should add weapons and such, is that a good idea?

I forgot to say thats the lowest I got in FPS I did get 60 :)

-fixed some bugs
-added /randommap
-added scores
-added a new map, bringing the number of maps up to 12
-shows who won when changing map

I hope you like the newer version. Please report any bugs you find, and if you have any ideas for how I can improve this, please say.
