Blue Pearl
The sequel to Redpearl.

Genre/Category: Maze?
Download Size: 1.60 MB
Game File-Type: Executable in a .zip file
Resolution: 360x360 Windowed
Current Version: 1.2 30/11/06

A simple idea but a challenging game. Simply guide the ball to the goal on each of the 27 levels. On the way, avoid a huge number of hazards including spikes, bottomless pits and miniature black holes.

The game includes a level editor so you can create levels of your own to challenge yourself or your friends.

Really nice game, i've played this at various stages of production, and its a great original game. Well apart from Redpearl, but that doesn't count.

The levels do tend to get very hard, but its still a fun game, with some great ideas and nice graphics. The level editor is also a great feature, as it keeps the level file sizes really small which is always good. This also adds a lot more interactivity to the game, as players can share their own maps.

I liked the effects such as fog and darkness, made the game a lot more challenging and fun to play for certain levels.

Graphics - 8/10
Originality - 9/10
Gameplay - 8/10
Playability - 7/10 (Gets very hard)

Overall - 8/10

I tried this on 64 Digits.

Gameplay 8/10 (Not original)
Graphics 7/10 (Not perfect, but they fit)
Difficulty 7/10 (Should be harder, it's currently on the easy side)
Sound N/A (My speakers were off)

Overall: 7/10

I like the new graphics, I really recommend that you call it 'Blue Pearl' rather than 'Ball!'. I'd scrap the 'ball!' part all together its very overused, plus the other has ties to the original.

Thanks for the good feed back so far. I've decided to rename it Blue Pearl so as of Ball! v1.1.0 (Which I uploaded earlier today) it's Blue Pearl.

Has anyone used the level editor yet?

Again my review, slightly edited for the full version ^_^

Concept

Blue Pearl is unlike every game you will ever play. It is getting harder and harder to come up with original idea's for games, since almost everything is already used once.
Blue Pearl however, is a one of a kind game, it has the most original and unique concept, which makes the game incredibly addicting.

Gameplay

The gameplay is, like the concept, absolutely fabulous. There are no bugs at all and it plays really smooth.
Also there are loads of objects to keep you entertained, windblowers, suckers, spikes, turbo's, heated floors, ice floors, TOO much to mention all.
What makes Blue Pearl different from Redpearl, is the new gameplay element: Puzzles.
Where Redpearl only made you avoid objects,Blue Pearl also makes you solve puzzles to reach the exit.
For example you have to use switches to turn electrical streams on and off.
The puzzles are not too hard, which perfectly keeps the balance between avoiding and solving puzzles.

Levels

There are LOADS of levels, enough to keep you entertained for a while.
Every level is unique, because of it's different objects and puzzles, but also because of the different themes. Every 2 levels have their own theme. So just imagine HOW MUCH themes there are! The themes are SUPER original and above all realised with beautifull graphics.
This, like the addictive gameplay, also keeps the game very entertaining.
The level design is incredibly well done! So well I can't really say more then that its absolutely great.

Graphics

As I already mentioned, the graphics are really beautifull, the themes and backgrounds are fantastic to look at and the sprites of the objects are also
great. Everything fits in with the game perfectly.

Replay Value

The replay value of Blue Pearl is incredibly high, not only are the levels so much fun to do again, if your bored of playing you can also make your own levels in the level editor! endless possibilitys!

Overall

I'm not gonna give this a grade, there's no grade that can describe Blue Pearl
This is without a doubt the best 2D game I've ever played.

This is quality!
I played red pearl and i was amazed!
This is the thing that some people that use gm dont understand. They think "Oh man im gonna make half-life 3 and doom 6 and its gonna be made in 2 weeks!"

This is what gm was made for!

Review of Blue Pearl

Pros: Difficult, Challenging, Very addictive, Brilliant level editor
Cons: No music and little sound effects, not enough levels

Graphics = 7/10

All the graphics were nicely done and suited the game style. There was also plenty of variation but perhaps they could have been made a bit sharper and had more detail in them.

Sound = 2/10

The games only major letdown. No music at all and only a small collection of sound effects that are too intrusive without any music to accompany them.

Gameplay = 9/10

Lots of variation in levels and challenges. The ball physics were fantastic and each of the hazards offered their own unique hinderence that added a lot of depth to the gameplay. Simple controls to pick up as well, but very difficult to complete the later levels.

Lifespan = 8/10

Whilst the main game itself was hard to complete, it was still do- able in under an hour on my first run through. Some more levels would have solved this problem but this game lasts even longer when using the amazing level editor included.

Originality = 9/10

Even if it does feel like a spiritual Monkey Ball game it is a game very rarely seen in 2D and it is pulled off fantastically like its prequel. Expect sub- standard clones to be appearing when this game catches on.

Playability = 9/10

I played through nearly the entire game solid as the gameplay kept me addicted. No noticed bugs or glitches and very pleasing on the eye with multiple tilesets and gfx.

Presentation = 7/10

The title screen of the game is as good as it needs to be and the whole game is controlled via keyboard input which is handy. However, more could have been added such as a running stats tally and introductions to each level. Some options to turn off the sound effects would have been nice as well.

Overall

Blue Pearl is a well designed game with very high standards. If you are looking for an addictive game to play whilst you have time to spare then you can't go wrong with this. The lack of music is a let down but it still doesn't detract from the experience.

Again it's nice to see the good feedback ::lmao::

Like I said when Redpearl was released I've left out the music partly so people can listen to whatever music they want and more so because I can't create music and didn't want to use midis taken from another game. I've noticed music or lack of good music is a common problem with many GM games. If you happen to be a good composer and like Blue Pearl I'd be more than happy to add some custom made music to the game.

Has anyone actually used the level editor to make a full level? If you have the level files are only about 4kb each so please share them, I'll also host them on my website if you haven't got a host.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

It should do already? Is your monitor contrast or brightness set fairly low?

Nice game, I liked the level editor but how did you restart it after doing it, like if there were switches?
