Wubly ²

EDIT: Oct 10, small update:
Fixed a few bugs with saving level editor files (they messed up the game's save data)...

Introduction
Wubly ² is the sequel to Wubly, a game that many people loved. Wubly ² is not a true sequel in the sense that it continues with the same kind of gameplay/graphics. But it is a sequel in the sense that, again, it's an addictive game with original gameplay. Wubly ² is a combination between a puzzler and a platformer, is easier to get into, and also more slow paced than Wubly 1.

Core information
Title: Wubly ²/Wubly 2
Genre/Category: Puzzle/platformer
Download Size: 5,36 MB
Game File-Type: Stand-Alone Executable
Resolution: No Change, Windowed (640x480)
Current Version: v1.1
Written In: .1 Registered

The Gameplay
In Wubly ² you control Wubly by shooting a Hookshot Device. This way you have to figure out a way to the End of the level. Since there are many blocks that react in different ways to the hookshot, Wubly, or anything else, there's tons of puzzle possibilities. You have to try it for yourself to totally understand of course.
There are 6 different worlds, and each world has 9 levels and it's own theme. Then there's a boss battle as usual. Between worlds a story is told.
The controls are really simple and are explained enough during the game.

Unlockables
People who have played Wubly 1 know that in that game were tons of extra's to unlock. This game is not THAT big (Wubly 1 was ridiculously big), but there's still a few very cool things to look forward to when you've defeated the boss. Earlier in the game, you will also unlock one of Wubly ²'s most important features: the Level Editor.

Level Editor
The Level Editor of Wubly ² is very easy to use, has a lot of options, and you can test your level anytime during editing. Levels can be saved as Level Editor Files, so you can always load them and edit a bit more. They can also be exported as LVL files, so you can upload your levels and let others play them. I hope people will do that. Because there are so many different blocks (as I call them) in this game, there are tons of possibilities. And a lot of them have yet to be uncovered.

Music
The music in this game was made by TurqoiseStar, subsonic, and WoOxZy. Thanks guys! I'm sorry I let you wait for over half a year. They've made some really good songs, so I'm very happy with that.

Closing comments
I'm very glad I finally finished this game, it was a lot of work, and I hope people will really enjoy it. Just like in Wubly 1 I have also included a Records screen where you can check your total number of deaths, shots fired, etc, just for fun. I also hope people will start to make their own levels, since it's a great option and the Level Editor is just great to work with. I will release a Level Pack myself soon.
Now go on and download this game!

Yay! Dling...

Edit:

That's really awesome, eventhough it's way different fromt he first game. I like the hook-shot idea, and the way you've to make it to the exit through all the puzzley stuff. Good job dude.

Like many GM games the graphics arn't amazing, but this makes up for it in so many ways. The sounds are good and I think there all original, but it's the gameplay that this has really got.

It's like nothing you've played before. I didn't get far enough to get any secrets (I'd have liked to have tryed the level editor) but I'm guessing they're pretty good. Looking at the level select map there is a load of levels so this could keep you playing for hours.

I've never played the 1st wubly but having played this it should do just as well.

its really smooth and fun, i played the original wubly, i'd this is better.

Gameplay: 9/10 its not perfect, but its original, and really fun.
Sounds: 9/10 greta sound effects, the music fit well, but wasnt to catchy.
Graphics: 7/10 simple blocks, nothing too special, but nothing bad.

Overall i'd say about a 8/10, its original and quite addicting.

Heh, I remembered it as Wubly had better graphics, great game though . Too bad the game, like almost all platformers, got too hard too fast, also I had no idea what to do with those dice blocks :/. Really original and cool, gogo Wubly 3  .

All in all a good idea, and great execution, but there are some flaws. First, the invisible blocks just aren't any fun at all. You're pretty much resigned to guesswork, and it's never fun to be out of control in a game.

Also, the tutorials were a bit too tightly packed. I would have prefered it if a few new blocks were introduced at the start of every world. That way, the levels would have been steadily increasing in complexity, and you'd have some time to let the new information sink in.

Lastly, I think the levels are a little too long for their own good. For instance, the upper left level of world one starts out incredibly easy, without even the risk of failure. The last part is quite difficult, though, meaning you'll probably die a few times. That means you have to go through some tedious busywork just to get another try, which is no fun. The ability to save and load inside levels would help.

I guess I sound a bit overly negative. I do actually like the game quite a bit. I'll keep the shortcut on my desktop until I beat it.

(By the way, FallenMaster, the dice blocks are really quite logical, once you figure it out :)

The graphics could obviously have been better if you compare them to your previous game. Most of the sprites are blocks, and those blocks are all the same, except they have a different image on the front. But yeah the sprites are good enough, except the world map, that could really need some improvement. Some backgrounds would have been nice too.

The game itself is good though, a nice and original idea, and apart from the graphics it looks like you spend a lot of time to fine-tune it. The game gets too hard too fast in my opinion though.

One last thing, the "grabbing" sound you used got boring pretty fast.

Conclusion, it really is a nice game, but you could make quite some changes to make it even better.

Very nice game! I like it. Just noticed you're from Haarlem in Holland. I'm living in a city about 2 minutes of riving from there  .

The original server is now all happy-like, and so I'm removing the external mirror.

And in reply to Jesse's post below, I'm happy to host it as long as you want.

That's ok, CCTSMaster. I'm just very glad you hosted them for me. I'll try to make my own server work again soon.

Thanks for the replies everyone! Criticism so far seems to be that the graphics are too simple, and that the game gets too difficult too fast. I wanted to make it easier to get into then Wubly 1, and in that part I may have succeeded, but I agree some levels are difficult. I just hope people find the game to be enjoyable enough so they want to continue. As for the simple graphics, that's totally on purpose. I did not use backgrounds because they distract from the level design in my opinion (just like why I didn't include them in Wubly 1). However, I agree that the blocks could look flashier/nicer, but on the other hand, in my opinion there's nothing wrong with the simple style I used.

A bit of background information:
I started work on Wubly 2 over a year ago, and in the beginning worked almost every day on it. The graphics and all of the levels were already completed in the first 3 months. After that I didn't find enjoyment in working on it, and progress went really slow. The last few weeks I picked it up again, and completed it today. As I've experienced with other games I've made, most of the time goes into finishing off your work, and ironing out all bugs etcetera.

The biggest problem I have now is, "is the game fun enough for you to complete the whole Story Mode?".

Wubly 1 had lots and lots of levels and extra's, and I also remember that lots of people played it to the end. That game was way more diffiult then Wubly 2. Well, for now I'll just wait for more comments.

 2Dcube

I assume you mean the invisible blocks from one of the Tutorial World levels? I think it's fun to figure out and to hit the switch and then see where they where placed. Most of the time though, when invisible blocks are used, they're used in slightly different, for you less annoying ways. It just depends on how you use them. Because in that tutorial world level it's the introduction of the invisible block, I had to use them a bit more. There are other levels where they're used in more fun and ingenious ways.

I had lots of fun playing this! I didn't find any bugs but the message boxes are unprofessional, why don't you write your own textbox system?

As far as that, the game was fun and appealing. Two thumbs up.

Edit: I also agree that invisible blocks are annoying.
Also, is there any chance for a level editor?

Yes, yes, YES! A sequel finally worth playing. I spent so much time on the first game, and now my college grades are probably going to suffer because of you. Nice work!

When you said "different," I never thought it would be so distinct! I really like the hookshot device, that's what makes the game worth your time. I don't have the patience today to get very far, but from what I've played, it's fun. It's very basic and excludes all fancyness but as you said, it fits well.

Ah, you finally finished it. I asked about the game's progress so many times over MSN, I can't count, heh.

Being a fan of puzzle-style games, I liked the fact that you switched from the platformer format of the first game, my only real complaint is that the difficulty goes up a little too fast, but I suppose that's a good thing in this type of game. Excellent piece of work, 2dCube, and I was happy to compose for this

Well, its a big change from Wubly 1, but I say for the better,as Wubly 1 gameplay wasnt appealing to me. However Wubly 2 on the other hand is heaps of fun! You had a large variety of blocks to create many different puzzling levels. I have had no problem with the gameplay on Wubly 2, and supprisingly the music actualy stayed on during this game, most of the time I do not enjoy game music, but it was well made and put in perfect.

I have just started on the water level, and finding it quite hard racing against the explosion blocks (any tips?) I havent timed myself but id say been playing over 30mins so far, and I bet ill be playing for alot more!

All up, great game, all seemd to fit well. I give you 9/10.
